Dear Angela and James, We are deeply saddened to learn of Charlie's death. B. knew him well in the early 70s in T.O., did many a sprint start with him at the Pig Barn when he was still running. She last visited with him in the mid-90s. T. knew of Charlie from Stanford and wondered who was that fast white boy from Canada. He did not suffer fools and was outrageously opinionated; still, he could summon patience and generosity when need be along with a self-deprecating wit. The fastest guy from privledged Rosedale did not have a racist bone in his body.

My condolences to Angie and family. Charlie was a passionate coach who influenced many athletes and coaches in the track and field world. I have fond memories of Charlie at the 1972 Olympic Trials that I directed where Charlie qualified for the Munich Olympics. He was a superb runner. His family were great officials for the track and field programs across Ontario.

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Charlie Francis. Charlie Francis was a coach who was 25 years ahead of his day. I was truly fortunate to have the opportunity to know Charlie and to learn from him. Every time I work with an athlete, I hear Charlie's analytic mind and voice . . . always asking why I chose the drill or sprint and what do I expect the athlete to gain from it. Charlie was always honest and direct with any question posed to him. The loss to the coaching and speed community is enormous and irreplaceable. I am sure the loss to your family is greater. Please accept my condolences at this difficult time. I wish you fond memories of Charlie. Joseph Horrigan

I was deeply saddened to hear of Charlie's passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to Angie and James. Charlie was a very influential mentor to me during my early years of coaching. I will always remember the hours we spent together on track and at Bibler's restaurant talking. I saw firsthand the commitment and love Charlie had for his athletes. His passion, intellect and knowledge of the sport were what made him such an outstanding coach. I will forever be grateful for his friendship and all that he taught me.

Dear Ange, Please accept my most sincere condolences. I'm proud to have known such a kind, warm, caring and brilliant person. My prayers and thoughts are with Charlie and with those he left behind. May God give him eternal rest and may his soul rest in peace. Charlie's passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who knew, loved and respected him. Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. May friends and family comfort you and James as Faith upholds you. For death leaves a heartache that time may heal, but his soul leaves a legacy of love and memories that will live on forever in your heart. Please remember that you and James are in my thoughts and my prayers. With deepest sympathy, Karen

I would like to wish you and your family my deepest condolences trained with Charlie for 3 years in the 70s. I was an ordinary athlete with no special ability and yet he always had the time and kindness to help me and give me advice. I have the greatest respect for his analytical approach to coaching. I have been a high school teacher and coach for 20 years. I believe that Charlie taught me how to be a good teacher and coach. I am forever indebted to him for all he taught me.

Angie, it is with deepest sorrow that I express my condolences to you and your son for your loss. My time with Charlie was brief and the quality of the conversations was of a more philosophical nature as opposed to athletics. I will always remember those times as he tried to offer me peace during a chaotic period in my life. Charlie treated me with respect and I welcomed his Joie de vivre. May the heartfelt wishes of others provide you with solace. With sympathy, Randolph A. Sealy

Charlie you truly were a coach whose prime concern was for your athletes: I believe your heart was in the right place... People may not have had the opportunity to experience what a very bright guy you were beyond being one of the best coaches in the world (according to rival coaches I have met around the world)... our saturday morning 'coaching' discussions at the pancake house will be a lifetime memory for me: How I had to prepare for them by reading the latest middle-east news, commodities reports and Canadian political policies(your grasp of history/political science was amazing). Then we could talk about the upcoming week on the track. You wanted a 'level playing field'... it isn't here yet, but in a strange way I believe we are closer to obtaining it because of the passion you invested in your athletes. Rest in peace Charlie, you deserve it! sue

My deepest condolence to Charlie's family on the the loss of a man who was in my opinion always driven to be the best at what he did. I knew him well when he worked for me around 1980. He was making the transition from life insurance to track. I was to miss his deep intellect and strong work ethic. The news of his leaving this world shocked me but at the same time made me remember times that were awesome. Sincerely Ross

Dear family and friends of Charlie Francis and especially to Angie and James... Angie, I"m so sorry to hear of your loss. Charlie was a GREAT guy and I have fond memories of when Charlie, yourself, Angie Issajenko etc. came into my store in Yorkville way back in the 80's. Remember? Bodywear...seems like eons ago...(was eons ago!) I would have definitely paid my respects at the funeral home but unfortunately my mom (sends her thoughts as well) and I are in NYC for the weekend. When the time is right, and if you so desire, please get in touch. I would love to hear from you and reconnect. Kind regards, Kimme

Growing up, we all thought it was a big deal to come in first at the Mayfair track events; Charlie surpassed that distinction and indeed became revered by all the neighbourhood kids as the ‘fastest runner in Rosedale’. I reconnected with him in the 70s and was impressed by his eloquence and wit, but not his choice of pizza toppings! Angie, I remember seeing you at a local bakery about ten years ago and am sorry I lost touch with you both. Please accept my condolences and those of my brother (Jim Price) who also remembers your husband fondly and well.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Charlie Francis.I was lucky enough to work out under his guidance for a time when i was competing in Masters Track.I was able to gain a wealth of information about nutrition and technique. He took on any eager student whether a teen or a 70 something gentleman who was able to set a Canadian record for his age group. He was a star pupil and his technique was something to behold.I also remember getting a DEEP muscle massage from Charlie that left me in(Good) pain for a couple of days. It,s funny but i always thought that Charlie would be around and i could continue where we left off but life is fleeting and i never got a chance to say good bye and thank you. Rob Walker

We wish to offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, associates and many friends of CHARLIE FRANCIS upon his far too soon departure from the scene ... In our early youth, RICKY, as he was known in those days, was the absolute fastest runner and mover in Rosedale ... You just could not catch him nor even keep up with him or get near him when he was in full stride ... In those early life days none of us youngsters had any idea that he would develop into the top world class track and field athlete which he later became ... He was a very decent fellow, a good friend, a fine husband and father, as well as being a great coach in his own right and shall be remembered more for all of this by those of us who knew him.
