Toronto in 1954 could be an intimidating setting for a 22 year old in her first office secretarial position. In previous applications at well known organizations I had been asked to walk around the office before they hired me. Not so at the Thomson Newspaper offices as run by Mr. McCabe. They were all business but with a human
touch. When I had a personal problem and had to get home to Montreal quickly, there was a hand on my back.
Someone bought a one way ticket to Montreal, a little extra cash was donated from many co-workers and my
severance package was handled quickly and efficiently. Mr. McCabe ran a business with heart. i remembered his example years later when running my own offices.
