My calendar showed that today would have been Charlie's 77th birthday. While I knew his birthday and age, I did not know until I dug around on the internet this morning that he had passed away last April. I add my voice to the legion of lawyers who were blessed to have Charlie as a mentor. I spent about a month with him in 1982 while a student at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was a hard worker, gifted by language and a love of the yarn, with unlimited time to talk to a young, insecure, penniless student out of his league from Alberta. He maintained a healthy skepticism of government, was a lawyer's lawyer, and there was never a dull minute with Charlie. He genuinely cared about his clients, family, staff, students and friends and he could be mercilessly partisan. As it turned out, my admission to the Alberta bar coincided with his 50th birthday. We kept in sporadic contact. I expected him to live, practice law and tell stories forever. I wish I could have expressed more to him how much I appreciated his unique counsel, model and friendship.

I am currently living in Regina, Saskatchewan and just heard about Charles' passing. I came to know Charlie when I was an articling student at Holden Murdoch and Finley during the period 1988 to 1989. Working with and for Charlie during my articles was a very memorable and important experience to me and although it has been many years since then I have always considered him to have been an important mentor. When I heard of Charlie's passing in the most current issue of the UWO alumni magazine I certainly felt a sense of loss even after all of these years. Please accept my sincere condolences. Regards, Michael Crosbie, Regina, Saskatchewan

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Charles Mark. Charles used to sit in front of me in Church everyday at the Mother of Perpetual Help, where he attends daily Mass. I was kneeling by his side when he passed away peacefully. What a beautiful way to go to the Lord in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I am going to miss Charles. May his soul rest in peace.

Charlie was a wonderful mentor and a delightful man, always ready to share his incredible knowledge and unique sense of humour. It was a shock to hear this very sad news this morning; thankfully, he called me a few months ago to chat and we had a chance to catch up. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Thanks, Charlie, for teaching me so much about law and about life. Fondly, Simonetta

Charlie was a very important mentor to me in my early legal career. He was the consummate professional and a very, very nice man. He had so much patience with me when I would call him for his assistance. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Dear Family of Charles Mark: On behalf of all of us at the University of Western Ontario, I want to offer my sincerest condolences. Charlie was a member of our very first graduating class. Indeed, our first day of school tis past September was fifty years to the day from when Charlie started law school. Since that day in the Autumn of 1959, we've been doing our utmost to honour the trail that Charlie and his classmates blazed for us. For us at Western, Charlie was a pioneer, and he will always be remembered. Sincerely, Ian Holloway Dean of Law The University of Western Ontario

Charlie and I were partners in the firm of Holden, Murdoch & Finlay from the time that he joined as a partner until I withdrew in 1990. He was always a pleasure to be with, a fine partner and significant contibutor to the welfare of the firm. The last time that I saw Charlie was at Molly Logan's funeral a few weeks ago when we had an opportunity for much catching-up. Susan joins me in sending to Rebecca and all of Charlie's family our deepest symathy in their great loss. We know that he will be missed terribly. Charles Cowan

Dear Rebecca --- it was with great sadness that I learned about Charles's passing. Charlie and I were called to the bar on the same day in 1964. We frequently had cases opposite one another over the years and he was always a delight to engage with. We became friends and I think we had a mutual regard for one another. There were so many aspects of his character that I will remember -- not the least of which was his slightly wacky but absolutely delightful sense of humour. The last time I saw Charlie was a short while back, perhaps a couple of years ago. I was sitting in Divisional Court and Charlie had a case before us. It was an appeal from a decision of John Jennings J. In the course of his decision Jennings had made a statement on a point of law, in which he incorporated a Latin phrase. Before us, in his Factum, Charlie wrote : " That statement by Jennings J. is not only bad Law, it's bad Latin !! " He was an educated, delightful man. There aren't any like him around anymore. I'm sorry that I will be unable to visit or attend the funeral, as I'll be in the U.S from tommorrow for a week. With condolences to you and all the family, Sincerely, Lee.
