Ruthie fills a wonderful place in my heart. She was the dearest friend of my Grandma, Marguerite Burleigh, thus I grew up hearing all kinds of stories about their adventures at Prospect School and beyond. I cherish the visits that I had with her in Thunder Bay and the correspondence too. I was proud to introduce my children to her and was so happy that they also had the opportunity to experience a little bit of her magic. I'm thinking of you and sending my sincere sympathy.

My father, Don McPhail, was Mrs. Bell's grade one student in her first year of teaching in Schreiber, Ontario. What an amazing teacher she must have been that sixty or so years later, when he learned that she was in Toronto, where I also reside, he was absolutely thrilled to have the chance to visit her. That first visit turned into an annual pilgrimage for more than a decade, and we are all so grateful for the lovely times we had, in her garden or living room. My children and I loved hearing stories about when Grandpa was in grade one, and the kids always enjoyed browsing about her amazing room of stuffed animals. This Christmas, she gave my son Barky the cuddly dog, and told us that while Barky might miss her a little, and she him, he'd told her he wanted to come live with the boy who hugged him so tightly the last time he'd come to visit. I rather think that Barky will miss her, as will we, and we are grateful that she touched our lives with her grace, kindness, and genuine care for those who came into her life.

We will be thinking of Ruthie on Friday from across the miles in Thunder Bay. We didn't get the privillage of meeting her in person, but got to know her through the wonderful stories from our family members. She will be missed but never forgotten.
