Eva Hainey

Obituary of Eva Hainey

EVA HAINEY After 86 years of love and laughter, Eva Hainey, lovingly referred to as "Pool Nanny" by her three grandchildren, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2009. She is survived by Alex, her husband and best friend of 63 years, and was loved and adored by her son, Glenn, his wife Susan, and her three grandchildren, David, Laura and Michael. She will be truly missed by her sister, Thelma, and her brother-in-law, Doug Holmes, and by her sister-in-law, Ada Hainey. Eva was born in Montreal and excelled at school, earning many prizes, including the Montreal School Board Commissioner's Scholarship Medal, and a teaching degree from MacDonald College at McGill University which launched her extraordinary career as a teacher and guidance counselor. She loved teaching grade one, and later French, but found her true calling as the Guidance Counselor at Earl Beatty Public School in Toronto where she endeared herself to countless students. In retirement she concentrated her efforts on being the benevolent matriarch of the relatively small Hainey clan. Eva instilled in her three grandchildren a calm sensitivity and a commonsense one can only learn from a beloved Grandmother. Having suffered a stroke in 2000 she exhibited the incredible strength we all admired so much, battling back and attending the Aphasia Institute on a regular basis where the awards she won for her hard work and inspiring speeches were legendary. She was a trooper and a wonderful example for all of us. None of us who were close to her and loved her so much have any regrets. She lived a full and wonderful life and touched everyone around her. We all love and respect her immensely and we will miss her immeasurably. But we will never forget her! Please join us for a Celebration of Eva's remarkable life on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the ROSEDALE GOLF CLUB, 1901 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, between 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. If desired, donations in Eva's memory may be made to The Aphasia Institute, 416-226-3636 ext. 27 or through the website at www.aphasia.ca.
