Obituary of William Riddell
RIDDELL, William (Bill) Rober
tDied at the age of 75 on Sunday, November 29, 2009 after a long illness. Bill, the only child of Mary (nee Aird) and Robert Riddell, both deceased, is survived by his companion and spouse of 38 years, Chris Markle, and his adoring poodle Sporting Lad. After graduating from the University of Toronto and Osgoode Law, Bill began a promising career in the legal department of Canadian Pacific Rail; however, since the expectations were for him to move to various postings around the country, and he was an only child, he left CPR for Metro Toronto, where he was in charge of land acquisitions for the East-West Subway. This completed, he accepted a position as General Counsel, head of the legal department, (and sometime Secretary) of the Workman's Compensation Board of Ontario, where he remained for 22 years, retiring to private practice in 1987. Bill was a very generous, loving and thoughtful man, who, before his illness came to dominate his existence, preferred to quietly donate his time, skills and financial support to many individuals in need. He was very erudite - extremely well-read and devoted to his first love, classical music (he studied conducting in Germany). He will be fondly remembered by his many friends, those whom he helped, and lovingly by his family. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3. Funeral service will be held in the chapel at one o'clock on Friday, December 4. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
