Obituary of Betty Lilian Scale Hendrie Aikenhead

AIKENHEAD, Betty Scale Hendrie Quietly at age 93, surrounded by family, at her Toronto home on September 11, 2009. Beloved mother of Liz Forseth (Dave) of Calgary and Will Hendrie (Helen) of Scarborough; grandmother of Adam (Kelly), Will (Shayna), Michael, Brett (Sarah) and great grandmother of Aiden and Cian. Also step-mother of Tim Aikenhead (Kim), Chip Aikenhead (Virginia) and Anne Hayward (Paul) all of Toronto. Predeceased by siblings Muriel Harding-Newman and Richard Scale of the U.K; husband Lt. Colonel William (Bill) Brown Hendrie of Hamilton (1975) and second husband Jim Aikenhead of Toronto (1989). Born in London, England during the Great War, Betty had an eventful childhood. Her father, John Dymoke Scale, was a British army officer seconded to the diplomatic corps. Betty grew up in England, Finland, Sweden and the Indian state of Assam, where she first started to paint. Betty married Lt. Colonel Bill Hendrie in Aldershot, England in 1940. They later settled in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario where he headed the family transportation company, Hendrie and Company, and where they raised their family. Betty was a member of The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and won a gold medal in the 1968 Salon in Paris. Her landscapes have been shown in Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal, Paris and Tokyo. She loved animals (especially her small dogs), travelling, gardening and most of all, her family. They will miss her playful sense of humour, sharp wit and quiet courage. The family thanks Dr. Jan Blumenstein and Betty's home care providers for their devotion and exemplary service. Funeral service to be held at CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, 1570 Yonge Street, Toronto on Thursday, September 17 at 11 o'clock.
