Dear Barry, I'm not sure if you remember me; I worked with the Out of the Cold program at Eastminister United Church, where I believe I first met you. I was saddened to read in the paper of Laurie's death. Although I did not know her, I do have a memory of you wheeling Laurie through the crowds at the Beaches Jazz festival many years ago, and how happy you both looked. Please know I am holding you in my prayers at this very sad time. Sharon Konyen

It was a privilege to meet Laurie, however briefly, a few years ago. Since then I have heard many accounts of her courage and spirit in the face of the incredible adversity of her illness. I have continued to be profoundly moved by the love and devotion of Laurie's husband Barry, her sister Wendy, her parents and the other members of her family. May Laurie now rest in peace.

Our lives are shaped by the many people we meet along life’s journey, and fortunately for me, Laurie Shilton is one of the people who has had a profound and lasting impact on my life. Laurie and I met when we were both in Grade 4 at Tecumseh Public School and we became instant best friends. I can only smile as I look back on those years, recalling the many wonderful experiences I shared with this beautiful and engaging young woman. It was Laurie who taught me how to place a worm on a fish hook, an activity we enjoyed many times over at the family’s cottage in Haliburton. We were pirates together in Peter Pan and I was Auntie Em to her Miss Gulch in the Wizard of Oz. We built snow forts together at her grandparents’ home in the country, and both learned how to ski at Mansfield. I recall many sleepovers at her house filled with lots of laughter but very little sleep. She adored C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia books and Cat Stevens, and had a brilliant imagination. We built a wonderful Fort Louisbourg out of dough for a school project in the basement of her home, and experienced our first hot pants, gogo boots and maxi coats together. We exchanged notes in school about the boys we had crushes on, and I marveled at how she could control her ‘banana bike’ as I rode nestled between the tall handles. I was shy and introverted at the time. Laurie was outgoing and had a wonderful zest for life. Though we eventually grew apart in high school as we developed different interests, she has and always will remain a very special and cherished part of my life. My sincere condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Shilton, Peter & Heather, Phillip & Ellen, and Wendy and families and to Laurie’s husband, Barry and family. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

It is very seldom that we go through the obituaries, but last night upon turning the page, Auli, my wife, asked me if this was Laurie, Barry's wife. I saw Laurie's picture and there was no mistaking that beautiful smile, eyes so bright, a person so full of life and enough love for all around her. I was truly saddened as I read the notice, but afterwards, the memories of times past could only make me smile. Laurie touched our lives for a few years around the time she was diagnosed. Laurie and Barry had brought a new member into their family, a beautiful golden retriever and every morning we would share a walk with our dogs running along the shores of the lake at Ashbridges Bay. What a great way to start your day and to share it with Laurie, the other walkers and all the dogs made it special. Laurie brought a smile to our faces and whatever the weather it was always a great day. We would laugh and talk about everything under the sun, as it always was always shining. Some days we would shorten our walks to sit and rest, which was fine, as the dogs would run and play and we could share our thoughts. Those days have passed, but thankfully the memories live on. Laurie, we raise a glass of wine, as we did a few times on Sammon Avenue, in a toast to your life. We thank you for sharing those times with us and for all the beautiful smiles. God keep you safe and once again walk with all our dogs, that hopefully share your new found beach. Barry, the Shilton and Chisholm families, our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Bruce and Auli Sammons

It is with great sadness that I send these condolences to Barry and the family of beloved Laurie. Looking after Laurie as MS patient was my privilege and although Laurie was not able to speak, I felt an undefined connection with her. She will be missed by all in our team at the Spasticity clinic at Baycrest. Our prayers are with the family and friends.
