To members of the OBA staff & Heather's family, I had the pleasure of working with Heather when I was a member of the Pension & Benefits Section Executive over a six year period. I found out by accident about her passing when I went on to the site to renew my section membership. We have not been in contact much over the last 4 years but I feel an unbearable sadness. I hope she did not suffer too much and that the family will find peace. She was a wonderful person I was so proud to work with and call my friend. A very special light has gone out.

For Heather the Kindheart Heather was not only a great person who made many worthy and lasting contributions to the OBA, she was an exceptional leader in CLE. She was especially adept at shepherding along excellent CLE programmes, mentoring new initiates into the CLE structure and always - from my experience in any event - had the best interests of the OBA and the members in her foremost thoughts. She was passionate about her work and more importantly about the people with whom she worked, whether colleagues, staff or volunteers. One of her many strengths was in the behind the scenes planning and making things happen. She was also an enthusiastic seeker and initiator of technological changes. To Colm and Paul, may the knowledge that your profound loss is shared by so many people who cared a great deal for Heather, and by extension, care about both of you. With the kindest of thoughts, Kathleen and Robin Kelly

To Colm,Paul and Heather's family and friends, It is with great sadness we heard Heather had lost her battle with cancer . She fought this with her ever present positve attitude. No matter what the disease seemed to throw at her she was determined she would get over each huddle . Heather fought with grace and dignity and encouraged all around her to just be positive and kind to each other and do something special for your self each day...When I would ask "how she was ?",she would always respond in her upbeat manner ,and finish by asking what was I going to do that day for myself. On Saturday I made Heather's scone recipe which she made for me the first time we met. These treats are still a regular on our dock. I did not know Heather as a professional but I knew her as a gentle , caring friend whose son ,Colm ,was the light of her life . Heather will be missed by all whose lives she touched.Love Pat,Greg,Alison & Barrie

Paul and Colm, please accept my deepest sympathies on Heather's passing. May your shared love, laughter and experiences keep your memories of Heather ever bright. I cherish my memories of working with Heather over the years on CLE programs and I will treasure the image of her face as it would light up from inside whenever she would talk about the two of you. The tapestry of Heather’s life was brightly woven and true. She loved you both – she loves you still.

Dear Paul, I was deeply saddened to hear the news about your beloved Heather. Throughout all the years that I had the great good fortune of working with her (ie. on various continuing education programs in real estate for the OBA), I was always impressed by Heather's intelligence and quick wit, and her kind and charming demeanour. When I think of Heather, I am reminded of the line in Rudyard Kipling's poem "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs ...", because no matter how hectic things got involving a real estate program that was being planned (whether in organizing changes to the list of speakers, or collating last-minute papers, etc.), Heather handled every problem in her consistently calm and gracious manner, never losing her cool or her dignity. She was definitely a very special person, who made an invaluable contribution to continuing legal education in Ontario, and she will most-assuredly be sorely missed.

Dear Paul and Colm, All of us who knew and worked with Heather as volunteers at the OBA recognized her remarkable qualities - from the most obvious (her intellect) to the more subtle (she was a master facilitator), it was always a pleasure to work as a volunteer with Heather at the helm. I will remember Heather for her warmth, her creativity in problem-solving (bringing meaningful education to lawyers outside of Toronto, embracing modern technology), her warmth and generosity of spirit. Most memorable is her fierce love of Colm - how when he was a growing boy she would sparkle whenever she spoke of him. All lawyers in Ontario benefit from Heather's dedication to legal education. Those of us who knew her personally recognize the example she set as a woman who lived her life with passion and dignity. I will miss her.

I met and worked with Heather for many, many years and she will be sorrowfully missed. Her guidance, support and encouragement offered to me over the years were immeasurable. Heather was bigger than life. She always strived for excellence and had a gift of motivating everyone around her to do the same. She was a very gentle person, extremely intelligent, kind, gracious and had the utmost of integrity. She was a dedicated and devoted person to everyone who knew her, someone who always expected only the very best from herself, and lead by example, all coupled with the kindest, most generous and gentle soul imaginable. She was angelic. She loved and respected everyone, most especially Colm and Paul, and that was evident in every conversation you had with Heather. It's said that one can take nothing with you when you ascend to the Heavens and the only thing you can leave behind is a good name. Heather leaves behind the BEST name, the wealth of which cannot be measured tangibly because its value is beyond anything measurable. May her soul rest easy and be bound eternally in comfort and peace. May we celebrate her wonderful life and the everlasting legacy that Heather leaves behind. She will be sorrowfully missed by all. My most sincere condolences, Martin Copeland

Paul and Colm, I am sure no one can understand the depths of your sadness today. But I know that there are many of us sharing a profound sense of loss. I so much wish I had had the chance to say good bye. Heather was a wonderful friend. As a young lawyer she taught, nurtured and guided me at the then CBAO. Her hard work and dedication made the Annual Institute the premiere continuing legal education event in Ontario. As volunteers we would come and go, but Heather was the institutional memory that ensured continued success. Her smile, laugh and unwavering support for the Association and the legal profession were inspirational. Heather could always be counted on. Heather's importance to all of is demonstrated by the other condolences sent to you, which reflect many of my thoughts as well and I hope comfort you. She will be missed and never forgotten.

Dear Paul and Colm: I worked with Heather at OBA in many capacities over the years, and I was Section Co-ordinator when Heather was first running the Sections at OBA - so long ago. I remember Colm's arrival, and the joy that Colm brought to Heather. Later Heather was an enormous support during my stint as OBA Treasurer and then President. Heather was a person you felt was always there, not only as a colleague, but as a friend. When OBA meetings were out of town, she would spontaneously call me and ask if I had transport, since she knew that transport was sometimes an issue for me. Consequently, we had some good car trips together. We shared on OBA and parenthood, on politics and personal interests. Her spontaneous consideration towards others was just one of her many gestures of thoughtfulness that went way beyond her duties at OBA, and reflected upon her generosity of spirit. Many have spoken of her ability to manage storms with such calm, to inject enthusiasm, energy, originality and plain good sense, as well as her commitment to all of us who interacted with her at OBA. Those were attributes we all appreciated. Heather will be sorely missed. She has been sorely missed during her tough struggles. She will be remembered with fondness, and those remembrances evoke great memories. My condolences during such a difficult time, and for your extraordinary loss. With affection, Erica James

The legal profession in Ontario owes a great debt of gratitude to Heather McArthur. I had the pleasure of working with her for more than two decades. Her leadership in the field of legal continuing education resulted in countless lawyers being better informed and thus better able to serve the needs of their clients across Ontario. When I started Operation Update almost twenty years ago, the internet was practically non-existent. Heather led the adaptation of the OBA to the new internet age. When she joined the OBA live presentations were the only way to attend lectures and out of town members had to take extra time from their practices to travel to Toronto for seminars. Now as a result of the efforts of Heather’s leadership and efforts together with other members of OBA, Webcasts and out of town video replays are the norm. The Annual Institute of Continuing Legal Education became the jewel in the crown of Ontario CLE events under her caring, patient and hardworking leadership. The traditions established during her tenure with the OBA will continue to pay dividends to continuing generations of Ontario lawyers. Don
