Obituary of Edith Chapman

CHAPMAN, Edith (Thompson)Passed away at Scarborough General Hospital on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Born in Lanark County in the Ottawa Valley, in 1922. She was raised on the family farm and in Almonte, Ontario. She graduated from Normal School (Teachers' College) in Ottawa and began teaching in the Kingston area. While working on her degree in summers at Queen's University she met Herb Chapman at a Sadie Hawkins dance. After their marriage in 1950, they moved to Toronto and later to Peterborough, where Edith returned to her teaching career and became a teacher-librarian. They returned to Toronto in the late 1970s. After an early retirement she devoted her time to the stitching arts and was active in a number of stitching guilds. She excelled at several of the stitching arts — traditional rug hooking, cross-stitch and advanced needlepoint. Her work adorns her home and is also hung in a number of needlework shops. In more recent years she took great pleasure in mentoring younger stitchers. Edith is survived by her daughter, Kit, and son-in-law, Bob Zachary. She was predeceased by her husband, Herb (in 2006), and siblings Annie Johnson, May Howitt and George Thompson. A special thanks to Helen and her family. Their active support in recent years enabled Mom to remain independent and stay in her own home, as she so strongly desired. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, May 20 with the time to be determined. Private interment. If desired, the family suggests donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Lupus Ontario. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
