To the Scarborough family, I offer my heartfelt condolences. Norma was a bright light in the sometimes complex, but always interesting world of pro-choice politics. I recall having many a laugh with her, and her intense commitment to ensuring that the women of Canada have unrestricted access to abortion was always paramount to her. What a wonderful, brilliant woman she was. Sincerely, Norah Hutchinson Vancouver, B.C.

Norma has been a most wonderful leader in CARAL throughout its many years of struggle for women's access to safe, legal abortion. She was wholeheartedly committed to women's rights. I remember her taking the time to come to Ottawa with her daughter about 30 years ago to attend a protest for choice on Parliament Hill with our local Ottawa members, and appreciated by us. Norma used her very good common sense when dealing with the media, giving them reasoned, humane responses on what was then a 'hot' topic. We CARAL members who knew her during this historic effort for women's choice will always remember her with much admiration and love. My thoughts and sympathy go to all of Norma's family after this great loss. Sincerely, Blodwen Piercy

I remember when I first connected the dots between my friend Pat and this inspiring woman, Norma Scarborough, who I’d been getting letters from over the years. I mean I’d heard Pat talk about her Mom, Norma, many times. And then one day Pat said something that twigged for me. ’You mean your Mom is that Norma Scarborough? The same Norma Scarborough whose been sending me these letters in support of CARAL ?’ I was shocked. And then Norma came and spoke at one of our International Woman’s Day Pot Luck Dinners in Bobcaygeon. She talked about her life; about how big things can happen when an ordinary person decides to take a chance and act on what she believes in. How that is exactly how things do happen. Thank you Norma for inspiring me and for reminding me to keep taking those steps into the world in support of my dreams and my hopes.

To the Scarborough Family I am thankful to have known your mom. Norma was a woman unlike any that I had ever come across before. She has proven to be a woman unlike any that I will ever meet again. She was a uniquely gifted woman, who I respected and cared for. She loved my children. She showed them by example, to embrace their individuality. She showed them that sometimes the path of life takes on person in one direction, and that it is as acceptable for the one who chooses to take an entirely different direction. She was a great believer in personal choice, and helping others. Norma did not judge or condemn. However she had an amazing ability to express her opinion, and fight for what she believed. I pray that my children will grow up to have a little bit of their Grandma Norma embedded into their beings. I remember your mom who seemed to be most content when all of her children were able to get together at the same place and time. I picture her during these times as a mother hen clucking and crooning in contentment as her five chicks gathered around her in a confusion of various voices, often a difference of opinions, hugs, affection, and sometimes the scattering of feathers. She loved you. Gary, Patricia, Gregory, Pamela, and Garth; my condolences are with you during the loss of your mom. She was an amazing woman. Sincerely Susan L Scarborough

Norma was a wonderful woman who gave her all in the long fight for women's reproductive freedom. The role she played in the overturning of the federal abortion law, and the establishment of fully funded abortion clinics will never be forgotten. Norma was a warm and caring individual whose contributions have made the lives of women in Canada significantly better. Well done sister.
