I am so sorry. I just received an email about Doug and his sudden passing. It has come as a total shock and I kept thinking that there must be some confusion or misinformation. I haven't seen Doug for a number of years and I will always remember him with the fondest memories. My deepest condolences. I only wish I could have been there to share my feeling of loss and show how much he will be missed.

To the Frith Family, I had the pleasure of meeting Doug in the late 90's through my work for the Ontario Film Development Corporation. Our professional paths continued to cross over the years, and in the course of our interactions I developed a real fondness for Doug. Besides his intelligence and considerable career achievements, what made me like and admire him so much was his warmth, his evident love for his family and children and his generosity of spirit. He was always willing to be a sounding board and offer advice and guidance, even though I was then a newcomer to the business. He was a good friend to the industry, and to many in it, and I will miss him greatly. My sincere condolences to Patricia, Doug's children and the rest of the Frith family. Sara Morton

My deepest condolences to the family. Doug was a special person and his obituary does an excellent job of capturing his unique and outstanding character. Working with him recently at the Ontario Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs was a pleasure and honour. He added significant value to our work and I am grateful to have had the privilege to learn from him. I am sorry that we cannot continue to rely on his advice.

He was a wonderful MP, alive to the concerns of its constituents and enchanted with the rich traditions of Parliament Hill. As a journalist for Maclean's in Ottawa in the early 1980s, I would meet him for lunch in the Parliamentary restaurant occasionally. He was very informative, very smart and very funny. His opinions were always trenchant and very behind-the-scenes "informed", even after he left the Hill. I am so sorry for your loss: It is huge. He was such a presence. mary janigan

I wanted to extend my sincere condolences on the shockingly sudden loss which you have suffered. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time. I only met Doug a few months ago at Hy’s, a well-known restaurant and watering hole in Ottawa. In our short acquaintance, I sat beside him a number of times and was about to invite him to a Senators game on April 7 to further our friendship. All the nice things that have been written about Doug are true; he was fun to be with and loved his work. Again, my sincere condolences, particularly to the children and grandchildren.

To Patricia and Doug's family, I am so dearly sorry for your loss. I only knew Doug for a few months as he worked with us at the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, but I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to know him. He had not only a passion for his work, but showed such a genuine respect and care for the people that he met with. And his energy was infectious! I heard many stories of Patricia and his children and he spoke of you all so fondly and with pride. I will remember him always and will keep you in my thoughts during this very difficult time. My sincerest condolences, Stephanie Prosen

To the Frith Family and Patricia: I had the honor of meeting Doug in the late 1990's, interviewing him before he came to work at the CMPDA, and I then spent the following decade working closely with him from the head office of the CMPDA's parent organization. Over and again, Doug succeeded with everything he touched professionally. More importantly, he was the warmest, most genuine person I've ever worked with, with a deep love for his family, his country, and his colleagues. We remained fast friends after we both left our respective places in the organization, and his loss is felt far and wide. With deepest condolences, Bill Murray

My condolences to Doug's family. I attended Sudbury High School with Doug in the 1960's and remember him to be a friendly, genuine person. Later, I spoke to him at an event on Parliament Hill during the Trudeau years and found him to have retained his easy going personality. His achievements throughout his career are outstanding.

Dear Patricia and family of Doug: Like so many of his friends and associates, I was stunned to learn of Doug's sudden passing last Saturday. He was so vibrant, so energetic, and so fully of ideas. In the case of his work with the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians, through which I knew him best, he had a take-charge attitude and can-do spirit that inspired all around him. I enjoyed his company. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered, not just by those of you who were closest to him but by the many friends he made so easily. Know this as you honor his life and cherish his memory. Please accept my sincere condolences, Francis LeBlanc

My prayers for peace and comfort are sent to Doug's family. Maureen let me know of Doug's sudden death. I am a cousin of Doug's. My father was Gert's brother, Jack Cockburn. I have many memories of going to Sudbury every Queen Victoria holiday weekend, and playing in the hills with Howie and Doug. I remember walking on Sunday mornings to go to Sunday School with them. I haven't seen Doug in years, but have kept up with the family through our mutual cousin, Kathy Cockburn, and am sad that such a vibrant man has been taken so suddenly. I pray God's blessing on you, his family.

My deepest condolences to the Frith family and friends I met Doug years ago when he would take the Richmond Hill GO train to Union Station. With his sense of humour and his entertaining stories, he made those 40 minutes go by very quickly. I was impressed at his political career but most importantly, I was awed that he still remained down to earth, open, generous and with a great sense of humour. May your memories of him bring you solace during this difficult time. Antonette.

Dear Family of Doug Frith: I was shocked and saddened by the news of Doug's sudden passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your terrible loss. As Clerk of the House of Commons, I had worked most recently with Doug in his role as Chair of the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians (CAFP) and I am a great admirer of his stellar contribution in the establishment of the CAFP's Education Foundation. My personal history with Doug goes back to the early 80s when he chaired the Special Committee on Pension Reform. I regard that as the highlight of my experience as a committee clerk, largely due to Doug's skill as chair. He had a clear vision of what needed to be accomplished, worked closely with colleagues of all parties, was respectful to everyone and leavened hard work with a great sense of humour. He was a lovely man to work with. I hope that you will find comfort in your own warm memories and in the knowledge of the very high regard and great affection in which Doug was held. He will be greatly missed.

To Doug's family, I have warm memories of Doug in the early years as he began his career and his family. As Andraya, Sarah and Maggie grew and Doug's public service advanced, I often spent an evening with them. Doug was a gracious host and always made me feel welcome in their home. We had great discussions on philosophical and political topics-and yes-a lot of nonsense too! I will always remember his friendship during those years. Our sincere sympathy. Our thoughts are with you. Victor and Mary Lee

Doug Frith was a fabulous individual, who I met in Sudbury working for him on the 1980 Trudeau "Gunslinger" Campaign. As a committed Liberal, I was delighted to be helping Doug and his campaign. I handled the media for him and anything else that needed doing. The day Trudeau came to town was memorable, we had a huge turnout at the Caruso Club, and our campaign was doing very well. We had a few glitches, one day, the Mayor's car was towed from in front of our campaign office, not a good thing to do. I went to the towing company and told them who they had towed and got the car back. Doug thought that was hilarious ! I remember his wild Irish Setter too ! And his gorgeous kids. Doug and the kids came to visit one day, I lived across Ramsey Lake from them -their Irish Setter played with my Irish Setter who was equally crazy. Spoke to Doug recently when he was out with some mutual friends - that was great to get caught up. A dedicated politician, a more than dedicated father and a great guy - he will be missed by many. Farewell Doug. cheers Pam

"That which we do for ourselves, we take to the grave. That which we do for others in the world, lives on for eternity." PINE. This quote is so very applicable to Doug Frith. Doug and I sat on opposite sides of the house but we became friends, even during the turbulent times in the mid 80's. I always enjoyed my times with Doug. He was a true leader as shown by his wonderful record as a politician, and association leader and especially his work with the Association of Former Parliamentarians where he worked tirelessly for the Educational Fund and recently became its Chairman. Doug will be missed by all of us who worked with him in all the capacities he so ably filled. To his family, I offer my sincere condolences and I will remember you in my prayers. Doug left us far too soon, but will leave wonderful memories for all of us who mourn his passing.

I offer this prayer from St. Paul in Doug's memory: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith, 2 Timothy 4..6-8. Patricia and family, Madeleine and I would like to offer our most sincere condolences to you and all of the children. Doug was a most honoured member of our community and the whole of Canada. I first met Doug through his Aldermatic campaign in Sudbury, this soon turned into his Regional Chairmanship and then Member of Parliament. I was privledged to follow Doug as the Alderman in the Ward once he had been elected to Parliament. This of course meant we continued to work as Political allies on numerous community projects and initiatives and the odd fishing trip. More importantly we were good friends. My last meeting was a chance meeting at a rest stop on the 401, he returning from Ottawa and I from business in Cornwall, I will miss those intense politcal discussions. Doug was a proud father, great member of Parliament and most importantly a great person whom we were honoured to know. There will always be a spot in our hearts for Doug. Bill and Madeleine Sutton

To The Honourable Dougie: You are a marvelous human being and you are gone too soon. To Doug's family and everyone else who loved him, I extend my heartfelt condolences. In addition to absolutely adoring his children and grandchildren, he was a genuine and good friend. He was gregarious and liked people; in turn it was impossible not to like Doug. It is no surprise that people from every phase of his life are reaching out to express their support for his family and those who loved him - which pretty much included anybody who ever spent any time with him! Doug, we will think of you often and remember you with great affection. Best, Dan Johnson

TO THE FRITH FAMILY We are saddened to learn of your loss. Doug is fondly remembered as a boyhood friend and later, as a parent to the Alexander School Community for Andraya, Sarah and Maggie. Sir John A. MacDonald once wrote.."He was a man whose hand was open to everyone, whose heart was made for friendship, and whose enmities were written in water; a man who had no gall, no guile. Douglas Cockburn Frith was such a man. He lived respected and died regretted. With Deepest Sympathy Brian Charbonneau and family
