Obituary of Cathleen Dewhirst

DEWHIRST, Ruperta Macaulay Has died unexpectedly at her Don Mills home during the night of February 12, 2009. Though she was troubled in recent years by deteriorating eyesight and increasing circulatory problems, she remained an avid bridge player until the end, with an engaged and lively mind and plenty of strongly-held opinions. She will be sorely missed by her four children, Peggy (Michael Snow), Bob (Betty), Barbara (Andre Lessard) and Jerry (Liz Mackenzie), as well as by her eight grandchildren, friends and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband of forty years, Kenneth James Dewhirst in 1988. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 16. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, February 17 at 11 a.m. Interment Highland Memory Gardens. Born in Rossland, BC, in 1920 to Cathleen and Rupert Macaulay, Rue grew up in Montreal and graduated from McGill University in 1941. She met Ken Dewhirst and followed him to British Guiana during the war, where their first child was born. Returning to Canada in 1945, they lived in Montreal, Toronto, Galt, then Toronto again, spending summers at Lake Simcoe with their growing family. Rue was optimistic, energetic, an avid reader and full of accomplishments.
