Obituary of Andrew Cardy
CARDY, A. GordonPeacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, January 29th, 2009 at the age of 89. Born in Brockville, Ontario on June 14, 1919. Son of the late Roland and Jean Cardy. Cherished husband to Bay for 61 years, father to Barbara, Roland, Gordon and the late Rosemary. Respected father-in-law to Peter Blakely, Sandy and Deirdre. Very proud Grandfather of Alison, Scott and Elizabeth Blakely, Geoffrey, Baye, Alexandra, Chris, Jaime, Robyn and Harry Cardy. Brother of Marion Neilsen, her late husband Lorne, brother-in-law to Virginia and the late Frank Cochrane. Gordon was raised in Toronto and graduated from Commerce and Finance at the University of Toronto in 1942. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Artillery from June 1944 to February 1945 where he was decorated for bravery and awarded the Military Cross. He was a respected hotelier and long time Chairman and CEO of Canadian Pacific Hotels. His hospitality and generosity of spirit earned him friends from all walks of life and from across the country. He worked hard for his community and gave freely of his time and guidance to those who sought it. He was a man of honour, integrity and an individual who without hesitation consistently did what was right. He will be greatly missed by his family for whom he cared deeply and by all those who knew him well. A private family service has been held with interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Dad's life on Thursday, February 5th from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. at The York Club, 135 St. George Street. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Society or to the Veteran's Wing at Sunnybrook Foundation. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Sunnybrook who treated Dad with dignity and love during the last 3 years of his life.
