I just learned today of Dr. Irvine's passing. I was her patient at St. Mike's and can say without a doubt she saved my life. She was brilliant and genuine. I am deeply grateful for her care, and so very sadden by this news. My sincere condolences to her family.

I was her student in GI and then her colleague - we had many wonderful conversations as our working relationship became a friendship. She was an outstanding mentor and will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

It is with great sadness that I learnt of the death of my friend Jan. I first met Jan when we were both Gastroenterology Fellows at the University of Toronto from 1981-83. As a foreigner who been given the privilege to participate in the program, Jan made me feel at home when I felt rather out of my depth. There was a period in the rotation where we worked together at St. Michael’s Hospital and we became firm friends. She also invited my family into her home and in the following years always remembered my children’s names and inquired after their progress. During the ensuing years we met at conferences from time to time and we would go for dinner to catch up. This was a special pleasure. Professionally Jan made major contributions to the field of gastroenterology and was at the forefront of the specialty. I learnt of Jan’s illness a few months ago and sent an email which she answered immediately. During a transit stop at Toronto Airport, three weeks ago I decided to call not knowing what to expect. She sounded so calm and logical and welcomed my call and we agreed to speak again in the near future. However, that was not to be. Jan has died so many years before her time and I send my sincerest condolences to Sandy who she always talked of and admired so much and to Erin and Bryan.

The Irvine-Logan Family were our next door neighbours, when we lived in Rosedale. We have so many wonderful memories, in the short time that we lived there, but, I especially have one to share.
After a few neighbourly chats about our children, I decided to confide in Jan one day about some ongoing health issues that I had had for years. Without hesitation, she told me to call her the next time it happened, so she could help me with the matter. When she was leaving, I asked: "What if the attack occurs in the middle of the night? " Her reply....call me, so I did. Four in the morning she showed up, dressed in her jammies and her terry bathrobe on. She knelt at the side of my bed and gently did a full blown stomach examination, resulting in a diagnosis, along with a doctor's referral. Before I knew it, she was gone. The following morning, I did exactly what she told me to do and before I knew it, I was feeling good again...free of extreme pain! Jan showed me the way to better health and as you might know, she did this for many. She was an amazing doctor!
She was a soft spoken, gentle spirit....loving and caring. A wonderful wife, a loving mom and a sweet friend. She will be dearly missed.
