Obituary of Howard Tetlock
HOWARD SHERWOOD TETLOCK
Retired Colonel Howard (Howie) Sherwood Tetlock of Aurora, Ontario, died on Saturday, March 12, 2016, peacefully in his 91st year with family, caregivers and staff of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, at his side.
Howie was a small town boy from Mazenod, Saskatchewan who had a knack for pool, a love of mechanics, and who had (seemingly unlikely) dreams of flying planes. In pursuit of his dreams, Howie left Mazenod and enlisted in Her Majesty's Royal Navy in England and fought for Canada in WWII. When the war ended, Howie continued what was to be a distinguished career serving Canada in the Royal Canadian Air Force and fulfilling his dream of flying planes and, later, jets.
Howie met and married the love of his life, "his Joycie" Yates, in 1952. In 1953 he became the ever-proud father to Linda Tetlock (now Luksha). Howie's military career took the family through Germany, Canada, Japan and the United States. Upon his retirement from the Military, Howie and Joyce settled in Aurora, Ontario where Howie took on the role of Bursar of Saint Andrew's College; a role that he undertook with honour and which he served with distinction.
In 1980, Howie became a proud father-in-law to Paul Luksha and in 1986 he became a besotted grandfather to Jacqueline Joyce Luksha.
In all things, Howie was a real and wonderful gentleman. His family, friends, and colleagues fondly remember a true and loyal man with an engaging sense of humour.
Howie was enormously proud of his younger brother Burton, the entrepreneur in the family, who passed this trait, along with his common sense, to his son Doug and daughter Carla.
In his later years, Howie was lovingly cared for by Sunnybrook Hospital staff and by his caregivers Kristine and Haydee. Howie's family cannot thank them enough. With their steadfast care he maintained his dignity and even a quiet mischievousness, until his final day.
Howie's family will forever miss his wit, his kindness, and the joy of hearing him whistling in another room. To our Howie, we leave you with this; "From this valley they say you are going; we will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile; for they say you are taking the sunshine that has brightened our pathways awhile". You are missed and so loved.
There will be a celebration of Howie's life on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at the ROYAL CANADIAN MILITARY INSTITUTE, 426 University Avenue, Toronto.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
