Dear Zelia: It's so sad and hard to accept that your mother had left us. She was such a nice, sweet, considerate and courageous person. I knew her since six grade in elementary school, we were in the same class. Then one day she told me her family was moving to Korea and I didn't see her until about 15 years ago in our high school class reunion. After that we became good friends. Remember you and your mother came to our house in Palo Alto? And I visited your Mom, stayed in her house for 3 days in 2002? We had such good time together and we planed to have other trips in Canada with just few classmates together. Then she fell ill but she still talked about the trip, yet we all knew it might not be possible. She did not want to tell me about her illness because myself is a breast cancer survivor. She was such a considerate and selfless person, I shall miss her very very much. Please take care. From Juliana, we know you are a wonderful daughter, she was very proud of you and you had been the joy of her life. Love, Janet Wang

I would like to offer my condolences to the Soares family. While I only got to know Juliana over a few occasions, she was clearly a special woman, with a quiet strength about her. She was a dear friend of my mother's, and my whole family shares in your loss.

Although we attended the same Junior High School in Taiwan, Juliana and I did not overlap at School and I only got to know her many years later during several of our school reunions. And what a privilege for me to know this most generous and giving person! I was first impressed by her selflessness when she volunteered to organized the following reunion in Toronto after she had just attended her first one and know only a few of our classmates. That turned out to be a very troublesome task because our gathering was cancelled after the SARS scare and there were cancellation of hotel/restaurant contract, refunds to be wrestled, etc. I felt very bad that Juliana had to deal with all these by herself, because she was our only classmate who lived in Toronto. I was really moved to watch her quietly dealt with the defunct event and valiantly planned for a new one the following year while never let her fight with cancer got in the way! Juliana, you are a true friend and great colleague. You will forever live in my memory and continue to be my inspiration. Goodbye for now and I shall see you again someday. Alice (Wang)

I have always attributed Juliana's remarkable courage to her faith. But what does that mean to a non-Christian? Perhaps it is more than faith in a god, but faith in life, in leading a life of kindness.
