As co-grandparent of three of Phil's grandchildren, I always appreciated his warmth and kindness. He was a fine man. I remember the time when my late husband Cyril and myself were visiting at the Moon River cottage. Ignorant Limeys that we were, we tipped over our canoe just as we were arriving at the dock. We all had a good laugh. I know that Emily, Helen, and Thompson will miss their grandfather very much.

Dear Phil:
You were a great friend over the years, and one of the few who called me on my birthday without fail.
We will miss those dinners at Streeter's with you...your wit and wisdom.
We enjoyed our trips to Port Perry to have lunch with you over the summer. You never complained about your condition and as usual, made light of it.
I trust you and Streeter will share a few drams together up there. Our love to Pat. We sent a donation to her school in Kenya; what a beautiful memorial to a beautiful lady.
You will both be missed and remembered.
Love

For the MacDonald family, I remember pulling into the driveway that day, our new home in a new neighbourhood with a curious family of onlookers across the street. Six siblings, four boys and two sisters for bookends, lead by two of the most interesting and caring parents any child could ever hope to have. I don’t know what it was that landed me there but my fate became my fortune as over the years I came to know that family very well and they became an important piece of my life and development. It wasn’t long before a special relationship was fostered between me and the two youngest boys Mike and Phil. Those relationships allowed me entry into the inner sanctum of the MacDonald family home where I was exposed to a diversity of personalities as different as six kids could be yet tied by a common bond originated in the teachings and example of a patriarch with an insatiable intellectual curiousity and zest for life. Mr. MacDonald was a positive influence to all who met him. Always ready with sage advice, an open mind and ear and an encouraging word, he made you feel like you mattered and that you could do whatever you set your mind to. I have fond memories of casual conversation sitting around the kitchen table as family members came and went. Benches surrounded the table; seating arrangements to accommodate a full occupancy crowd of family and friends. Ensuing conversations were often light and humorous but also often deep and penetrating but never more so than when Mr. MacDonald sat at the head of that table. He had an ability to draw out your higher self beyond the intellectual and into the spiritual. It’s like he lived on a different plane of existence than the rest of us with an open invitation to join him whenever and wherever the opportunity arose. My twenty years plus as a neighbor and friend of the whole family are counted as a blessing to me and my wish for his children and grandchildren is that you find blessing, hope, peace and joy in the cherished memories of him. He had a blessed life and I am certain that he felt blessed by the gift of family and is now celebrating the rewards of a life well lived with family past. Perhaps his journey is now complete but knowing him it’s likely the beginning of a new adventure that we can’t even begin to imagine. I look forward to sitting at that table once again. With Love and prayers for the whole MacDonald clan, Peter Wright

To our dear neighbour and friend of many years: Thank you Mr. MacDonald for your thoughtful phone calls, cherished conversations, encouragement in the Faith, and words of wisdom. I remember your optimism that each of us, especially your beloved children, were able to make the world a better place. I know that is something that you and Mrs. MacDonald strived for during your time on this earth. Thank you for enriching all of our lives. Affectionately and Gratefully, Janice (Wright) Strong and family

My heart goes out to all of the MacDonald clan on the passing of your dad. He was a lovely man, so kind and sweet to us as kids growing up next door. I have memories of him sitting in the backyard reading, looking so peaceful as we all romped around, doing stupid kid stuff! He just smiled at us in his gentle way. I know the ache you must all be feeling, as our family having just gone through it with Dad's death a few months ago. No doubt the two of them are up there now discussing cerebral matters!! We'll see you on Friday at the funeral. Love and hugs.
