There a so many memories to share. One special memory is our trip to Finland, in 1993 for the World Future Society Foundation Conference. Through Allen's guidance, I was able to present at the conference. That was such a fantastic opportunity for me as a student. I met so many amazing people and the ideas and conversations that came out of that conference started shaping the rest of my life. Then came the Japan Future Generations Alliance Foundation in 1994. Mr. Yazaki, a visionary who trusted and relentlessly worked with Allen to create a better future was the president of the Future Generations Alliance Foundation. Allen encouraged and guided his students to create projects that would create better futures. Two of his students (including myself) not only won a trip to Japan, but the prizes awarded helped us to pay years of tuition during our graduate school days. I have wonderful memories of long walks with Allen admiring the colourful fish in the river in Kyoto. Mr. Yazaki and his team went out of their way to host and honour us. Shortly after in 1995, we had the opportunity to host Mr. Yazaki and his team and other important futurists in Toronto. I was most honoured and humbled when Allen chose me, one of his doctoral students to help him organize this conference in Toronto. Allen had a magical energy to empower people around him. In retrospect Allen and his students did so much with such ease and joy. Only he was capable of organizing an international conference with renowned Professors, NASA staff, authors and scholars. My best memory of that conference that he hosted at the Plaza Hotel on Avenue Road and Bloor in Toronto was at the end of the conference, all attendees held hands and listened to "Imagine "by John Lennon. Just like the song, Allen envisioned a better world and his life was dedicated to make it so. I will miss his always cheerful voice on the phone when I called and our inspiring hikes. I will miss sharing fig and lemon squares and fruit salads. His memory however, will continue to transmit to me creative energy and a force to make good things happen. Thank you Allen for having been such an amazing part of my life and for being an inspiration to so many others. Thank you for your important contributions and teachings in the classroom and out, thank you for being you. I know your soul will continue the search for creating a better world. May light be always with you. Love , Margarita

If a voice from the past may be allowed to join with Allen's futurist colleagues, I (Stan) have memories of happiness and admiration of our shared days at Victoria College, U. of T., when Allen was the editor or co-editor of Torontonensis, the university yearbook, for three years running: 1956,-57,-58. He and I were part of the original teaching staff when David and Mary Thomson Collegiate opened in Scarborough in 1959, sharing duties in the English Department for two years, before Allen moved on to newer challenges. He paid me the supreme honour of asking me to be his best man when he took the plunge into matrimony. I continue to have the highest regard for his intellectual gifts and his supportive friendship. Now he is at peace, and we are left to celebrate his accomplishments. To Susan and Paul, the young children who once frolicked in our front room with the junior Farrows, our condolences. Remember your dad with pride.

My warmest condolences to you for the passing away of Allen Tough. He was a great colleague in futures studies, and his ideas will live long in our minds and hearts. I have been thinking Allen a lot this winter, especially in connection with the initiative of ombudsperson of future generations (RIO +20). And I remember the valuable correspondence we had after 1997 World Futures Studies Federation Brisbane conference on the themes of future generations. Sincerely yours Vuokko Jarva, Adjunct professor, University of Helsinki, Finland

A tribute: Allen had a huge influence on me. He encouraged me in numerous ways, and was especially helpful in supporting my early explorations of radid onset climate change ("Learning the Names of Snow" and “Greenhouse and Ice Age Futures,” 1990). We participated together in numerous CONTACT conferences including a modified Bateson project where we role-played alien visitors (with Dina Supple) circa 2002, and in his online Contact with SETI project (of which I am still a member) was part of the inspiration for my novel Fire and Ice. I used his book Critical Questions about the Future for years in my futures studies courses. He was a gentle and intensely curious person. I will miss him a hugely.

Cathy, Susan and Paul, If I were smart, I would have set my sights on marrying Allen when I was 9, again when I was 11. His parents directed my parents to Bruce Beach, south of Kincardine, where swimming to a sandbar was an achievement, and walking up the beach with our own money for a cold drink from the store was an adventure. Allen and I, he four years older, spent hot summer days talking and playing brain games on rocks behind the cottages, and I was flattered that he liked to be in my company. Our parents, both sets, hoped Margie and I would be best friends, and she and I tried. It wasn't until I got the news of a 1958 North Toronto Collegiate music form reunion two weeks from now that I learned of Margie's death. Now Allen. I am truly sorry for your loss. Allen was already a prize as a child. His achievements don't surprise me in the least. Anne Marshall MacPherson

I was a teaching colleague of Allen's on the staff at Thomson Collegiate in Scarborough in the 1960s. I remember him well as an outstanding scholar and dedicated teacher. In later years, I met him from time to time at OISE and we had pleasant chats about our former days and the state of education in general. My sincere condolences to the members of Allen's family. Allen was a kind and brilliant man. His contributions to the field of adult and continuing education are inestimable--yet, he continued to be approachable, willing to listen, and willing to share. We will always hold him in great esteem and will hold a memorial for him at the International Self-Directed Learning Symposium in February. He is a recipient of our award for significant scholarly contributions to the field of self-directed learning.
