So sorry to hear of the passing of your father and grandfather. How blessed you were to have him for so long and know the joy he experienced in seeing his children and grandchildren grow and prosper. No doubt he has left a legacy of the gift and importance of a close family, and you will always remember him fondly.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Eckert family, but especially to Mrs. Eckert. A memory: When my mother (Kay) returned from the Mayo Clinic after breast surgery (a surprise that arose from a physical for other purposes), she went to Dr. Eckert to have the sutures taken out. He was caring and gentle, pausing to admire, as he termed it, 'the handiwork'. Can't make the MG&CC, today, but I shall, and do, remember. Robert

Dear Mrs. Solveig Eckert & Family: We are saddened to learn of Dr. Eckert's passing. He may be gone, but he won't be forgotten by anyone who had the opportunity to work with him or become his friend.Although we had not seen him for many years since his retirement from his surgical practice, we will always remember him professionally for his astute clinical acumen, fine surgical skills and warm and caring bedside manner. Socially, we will cherish fond memories of the many superb dinners he hosted at his gracious home on Godfrey's Lane. He was a great raconteur, and our conversations on a wide variety of topics went late into the night. One of his daughters spent time with my late parents in Goa when touring through India. May you find peace in your time of sorrow and joy in the memories of the days when he was in our midst. I am sure he was as proud of you as you have always were of him Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Joe & Madeline de Mello

A beautiful tribute to a remarkable man. So very loved and respected. My entire childhood revolved around the Eckert household. There was rarely a day that I was not there , connected closely to Bobo, for sleepovers, games, talent shows and cookies from Oma. So many wonderful memories on the lake. Dr Eckert and Solvejg always warm, welcoming and generous. I felt like one of the clan. My sincere condolences to the entire family on the loss of such a wonderful father, husband and friend. xo

Condolences to your family on your loss. I am the son of Jim Sheehan a jeweller who had an office above the Kingsway Pharmacy at Jane and Bloor. I often heard him talk of your husband and father since he played golf with him along with Dr. Bagliari and the three of them often lunched first at Lou's lunch counter in the Kingway Pharmacy and later Johnny's at Jane and Bloor. I became friends with John and Karen at Western. I went out West on an adventure working oil rigs with John and many other guys who made their way home to the Eckert’s dinner table and ski cabin. As I young man I came to Toronto to make a career and again was welcomed into the Eckert home on many occasions. Dr. Eckert (all of us referred to him as Dr. Eckert even amongst ourselves) would generously invite me to stay for dinner as he would any number of varied and interesting people. I loved to be amongst his family, to see him hold court at the dinner table. The highlight of the meal would come when one of multiple pies would be slid to him, the knife wielded by the sure and steady hand of this venerable surgeon and the slices served up to his hungry admirers. In our younger years Eckert and Karen confided their dad insisted they demand the best of themselves. I always believed they and their sisters and brother were very fortunate to have this man as their father.

I would like to echo the thoughts of my brothers ,John and Steve . While my brother John forged the friendship with John Eckert , our families grew to know each other well over the years . Dr. Eckert was always friendly and genuinely interested in how we were all doing. One of the good guys!

I was lucky to meet Dr. Eckert, my dear friend Lilo's dad. He was a true gentleman who took genuine interest in his children's friends. I had the great good fortune to spend several weekends at their lovely chalet at Osler Bluffs. Dinner conversation was always lively and Dr. Eckert made a point of engaging everyone at the table. I remember arriving one cold Saturday morning at the chalet, and before we went out skiing. Dr. Eckert insisted we have a quick shot of Aquavit to warm us up! He will be missed, but will l live on,with so many wonderful memories. Lots of love to all the Eckerts and their families at this difficult time.

Forty-five years ago almost to the day John Eckert and I met and forged a close friendship that has stood the test of time. That friendship very much extends to his entire family - and I have always considered myself an extended member of the Eckert family. In the beginning there was no choice but to get to know Dr. Eckert well. After all, I had to go through him to access John, and it was near impossible to escape dinner if I had any chance of getting out on the town with John on any given evening. An extremely strict disciplinarian, he made John and me jump through flaming hoops - or certainly made us cut the grass on their multiple acre lawn with a push mower ... and fix the potholes on Godfrey's Lane - before even considering to let us go out, which he often did not even permit despite the hard labour. Those days seem so far away and not just because they are so far away. They seem so far away because as I sit here today, and for as long as I can now remember, Dr. Eckert has been a comforting kind and gentle soul who I genuinely loved spending time with, whether in the city or at the cottage. Dr. Eckert did not judge those around him. He enjoyed people of all stripes for exactly who they were - a quality which for me was a real plus! In my early thirties he saved my life on the operating table. I have the scars to prove it. A cosmetic surgeon he was not. At the time he was more worried about me than me was. I think that experience solidified what I have always felt was a special bond with him. I really will miss him.

I had known Dr. Eckert for most of my life. His son John and my brother John were good friends from an early age and remain close to this day. I found myself at the Eckert's Godfrey Lane home on more than a few occasions. Dr. and Mrs. Eckert were always warm and welcoming hosts. Over the ensuing years the Eckerts and McBrides became close family friends. Whether it be a family visit at home, an invitation to ski from the Eckert chalet at Osler, or a relaxing time at Kawagama Lake, Dr. Eckert was always friendly, engaging and keen to speak with anyone and spend time listening. I will always be grateful for the good discussions, helpful feedback and the trust he put in me as an advisor to he and Mrs. Eckert. What a guy. I miss him. Steve McBride
