Steve Russell posted a condolence

My memories of Bill Slater by Steve Russell I played doubles squash at the TRC with Bill Slater for many year starting in the early 1980s. He was 11 years my senior and I enjoyed learning the finer points of doubles squash from him. He liked to win. I was there mostly for the exercise. It is now safe so say that he did carry me to victory most of the time and it was a great feeling we shared. Like me, Bill was an engineer and after a hard played squash game, we would chat about his career finding practical solutions to civil engineering “wicket” problems. He enjoyed working on complex concrete construction projects all over the place and well past his retirement age. Bill got me excited about working beyond my retirement date on social engineering problems around keeping active as we get old that I now feel very passionate about. Bill was my role model. One day he told me about a book he was reading called “In the Skin of a Lion” by Michael Ondaatje. Bill was amazed by an engineer with vision who designed the Bloor Street viaduct for a train many years before the subway appeared. When I told him my grandfather, John E. Russell, was a pioneer in construction in Toronto in the early 19th century, including the building of this bridge, he inspired me to look further into my family history. I discovered my grandfather also built the Hunter Street Bridge here in Peterborough, where I am retired. Bill helped me to re-wire my thinking in retirement, to focus my interests and energy on staying activity both mentally and physically for better health and wellness. Finally, Bill would not miss an opportunity to bring news or brag about New Zealand, his homeland. Next fall my wife, Carol, and I are planning to visit there to find out if all Bill’s accolades are true! He will be missed but not forgotten, a short guy in statue who made a large difference in my life. Date: November 12, 2015

Bill was a real sportsman. He loved racquet sports. While he played with enthusiasm his real talent was for fair play and camaraderie. He was a mentor and model for younger players. As a teenager playing my first competitive tennis at Leaside many years ago I well remember his encouragement. Wonderful memories.

How well I remember the fun times I had with Bill playing doubles at the B&R. He was such a gentleman. I admired how he moved around the court even though his legs didn't always co--operate. However when you put the ball on his racquet he invariably would hit a winner. I will miss the after squash ( and tennis ) socializing where many stories were told and the game was rehashed. It was an honour to call him a friend. He will truly be missed. My condolences to his family Sincerely Arnold Massey

How sad to hear of Bill's death in the paper this morning. He was so full of life and energy and interest and curiosity. I met him first when I became the Rector of Christ Church Deer Park and early on came to know him and Judy and their journey. And then Bill and Bunny's wedding and reception and then other family occasions and celebrations. I remember also Bunny inviting me to play the piano for Garden Club of Toronto gatherings in their home. I send my warm greetings to the family. We moved to Stratford in June and are making a new life here so I can't be with you all on Friday. My wife Judy Maddren joins me in sending our prayers and appreciation for a life well lived. May Bill's Easter faith be ours as well. Sincerely (The Rev). Tim Elliott

What a very sad day. Bill will long be remembered. He was an inspiration to me in the game of squash. When I first started to play the "doubles" game, he was one of my first mentors and encouraged me. I shall be forever grateful.
