My Uncle Martin was my godfather but I haven't seen him for a very long time as I now live far away. He was always a fixture in my life when I was little though. He made me laugh with his funny whistle and his missing finger which he waggled in front of my young eyes telling me various stories on how he lost it. I remember going fishing with him and my father, playing his piano and my most favourite thing; going to his bakery in Peterborough.
My oldest and most vivid memory of him was when I was still a toddler. At one point my crib was downstairs in a room off the living room which was closed off by one of those plastic folding doors. Not wanting to sleep, I climbed out of my crib and crept towards the folding door trying to look under it to see what was going on. I must have had my hands in front of me probably sticking out through the bottom of the door because while I was trying to look, some enormous stockinged feet came up to the door and stepped on my fingers, scaring the life out of me and making me climb quickly back into my crib. I only knew it was my Uncle Martin because of his unique whistle, which I heard after I was safely back in my crib.
I think of you often and will continue to do so. Rest in peace Uncle Martin.

Martin was one of my oldest friends here in Canada since 1954. I will miss his Saturday phone calls a lot. I am glad he is relieved of his pain.

Lieber Martin, was always such a gentle, strong and loving support for Gunhilde. Since I consider Gunhilde and Alex like family because we have known each other for over 40 years, it gave me great comfort to see Gunhilde and Martin together. He will be missed by many.
