To the Ryan family. I was so saddened to here about Mary's passing at church yesterday. I had just been speaking about her to a very dear friend of mine Rita. Her sister Frances Longo was a dear friend of your mothers. Mary always called to see how Frances was doing and when she passed she kept in touch for a while with me to make sure that I was ok. She was a very thoughtful woman. I first met Mary walking up our street carrying groceries, my son offered to help her , but she said she was fine, and continued on. We seen her every day going for her walks just to get out of the house, she would pick up a few items at a time at the store. It was her way of staying healthy and fit, but also talking with her neighbors. Mary brought a lot of smiles and laughter into our lives and it was a privilege to know her. I am saddened by her passing, but am thankful that Frances now has her friend with her again to keep her company. God Bless your family for taking such good care of your mother.

Rest in Peace Mary. I have fond memories growing up - both seeing Mary and hearing stories about Mary. Mary was a dear friend of my grandmother, founder of Birthright, Louise Summerhill. Mary will forever be remembered by her Birthright family. My sincere condolences to the Ryan family in this sorrowful time. May Mary's love and legacy live on.

Pretty sure you’re confused about what family is Vick. Since when is Louise your Grandma? Rearranging things pretty Liberally hey? May you let everyone you’ve harmed rest normally Victoria and may you start to value all lives, not just your own. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die

I was so sorry to have missed the news of your mom's passing. She was a very dear and special friend to my mom, Louise Summerhill. I have such fond memories of visiting the cottage on balsam lake each summer for a day. My mom would take us "gallivanting" and inevitably each summer one day we would end up for a day with Mary and Pete. Mary would make us Kraft dinner (which we LOVED) and I remember she liked to add extra milk because it made it creamier. In my young mind it was fantastic and such a great treat. Funny what you remember... I also remember that when my mom was in the hospital in her final weeks the only friend she wanted to see was Mary. Mary was present with her and prayed with her and I am grateful for the comfort she brought,. I know they are reunited in heaven. I am so sorry for your loss but I know how grateful you must feel for having her so long.

I am so torn between great memories at Broadway - my first Christmas in Canada! - and the cottage, my privileged escape to paradise. Grandma embodied both and was so much more.
I will just throw out some things that I remember about Broadway first - the red brick pre-Lego blocks in the basement, The Little Bedroom that Jenni & I loved sleeping in so much 'cause it's where Mom slept and even more when those silly Mama & baby cows were added. I actually don't think we let Grandma & Granddad get away with putting us to bed without them. Grandma would forget sometimes and we would helpfully dig through the closet to get them down. I adored those silly ugly soundbox moo-cows!! THEN... we'd see the Jack & Jill cough syrup and pretend we had coughs just to get a spoonful. Grandma was wise to our games. Too many things but the Christmas Candle lights in the windows, the Blue Danube music box I adored and the static-electricity organ room! We had way too much fun learning the rhumba, the tango, waltz and bossa nova - all the while scrubbing our socks across the carpet and seriously frying the next person we touched! And being allowed to go downstairs to get Dusty a Milkbone from the shelves. Even THAT silly little thing was special.
It was always a treat to bake with Grandma - tarts especially - though she said Granddad was better. She even made hanging laundry fun because we were allowed to try to clip the clothes while jumping off the back porch. She was a woman who understood children's fascination and never let that go.
That's enough for Broadway... Cottage memories to come. I love you Grandma. Thanks for my Mom!

Sincere condolences to the large, talented offspring of Mary and Pete on the passing of an amazing matriarch who positively impacted so many lives. Her endless sense of wonder, subtle humour, and intense humanity will be sorely missed. I picture her planning a picnic to share with Pete and walking hand in hand to behold an amazing sunset. Thank you Mary for making the planet such a better and special place.

Growing up beside Mr. and and Mr.Ryan at the cottage was wonderful. There were always balloons that we would watch sail across the lake. There was the comforting sound of the fishing boat motor as Mr. Ryan came home from an evening fishing trip with Dusty sitting proudly at the front of the boat. There was the swing set in the backyard that we were invited to use whenever we'd like. There are so many memories of bonfires, tree cutting and fish fries - not to mention all of Dusty's adventures - as he took on porcupines, skunks and anything else he came across.
Mrs. Ryan would put us to shame as she dove into the lake every morning at the crack of dawn as we struggled to open our eyes. She was warm, bright, friendly, energetic and full of love. God bless you! xoxo

I knew her as Kathy's Mom as I met her around 15 years old as Kathy met me at Notre Dame and discovered I was motherless and decided to bring me home to meet her parents, what a wonderful mother, always smiling, and also a wonderful Father who for some reason I adored' at the same time I met Buster, to me I see the same ways in Kathy as her Mother, she herself smiling and little chuckles. RIP Kathy's Mom xo

My dad always said of my mother's best friend: "There's no one like Mary" and he was right. She never lost a child-like delight in the natural world around her, like flowers and sunshine, lakes and snowflakes, trees and clouds. She nourished our souls with waxed leaves, paper pokes of sugar and ribs of rhubarb. Mary enriched all our lives...

The annual regatta at the cottage was, and still is, a tradition growing up in the Ryan family. Even as an adult, I have tried to attend when possible to relive the magic of it. Gramma always attended, year after year, setting up lawn chairs in the front row to watch the races and other fun games. I always remember one year at the regatta where it was a bit windy and her hat blew off and she just sat there calmly and said "there goes my hat...". This was her way of asking me to go get it - Gramma, the master hinter. I prefer directness so I cheekily said "yup, there it goes" and laughed. Obviously, being the wonderful granddaughter I am, I eventually got up and retrieved it for her.
I don't know why but that interaction has always stuck in my memory and given me countless laughs as I've retold it many times over the years. Gramma always made me laugh, both intentionally and otherwise. Despite growing up in more "proper" times, she was always game for my cheeky ways, chuckling or "oh ho ho"ing when she finally caught on. She has always been one of my favourite people in the world and I will love her and miss her always.
