Obituary of Constance Quick

CONSTANCE FULLER QUICK 1922 - 2015 Constance has gone ahead to await, in the fullness of time, her beloved husband Dr. Edison Quick. She is survived by sons David (Gayle) Quick, Douglas (Diane) Quick, grandchildren Theresa, Laura, Alexander and Andrew, her brothers the Rev. Dr. Harold (Lorna) Fuller and the Rev. David (Bev) Fuller and her nieces and nephews. Throughout her life Con loved boating and the water. From her earliest years she accompanied her father as he ministered by boat to the then remote communities around Vancouver Island. Later in life she captained her own motor launch all over Georgian Bay. "I would read the charts and navigate" remembers her "mate" Edison. Con and Edison were active members of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club for many years. It was her favourite venue for family events. Thanks to Con, all of her grandchildren learned to sail at the R.C.Y.C. Although she reluctantly gave up her launch she enjoyed a painting of it by her granddaughter Theresa. She could also see Lake Ontario from the dining room at Nisbet Lodge and she continued to attend family occasions at the Island. On July 5, 2015 she was at the head of the family table at the RCYC on the Toronto Island for the last time. Con's career passion was the teaching of young children. She obtained her Bachelor's degree from McMaster University and her Master of Arts from Columbia University in New York. Her professional accomplishments were recognised in 1955 when she became a "teacher of teachers" at the Toronto Teachers College. She was appointed Director of the elite graduate Primary School Specialist Course and shaped a generation of teachers who would give the very youngest children access to the best teaching possible. At a 50th Anniversary Reunion of her former students she was thanked for her inspiration and was noted for having taught by both "precept and example". Con had a deep admiration for the courage and determination of Winston Churchill. A prized possession was a personally inscribed copy of one of his books which reads: "To Miss Fuller who has inspired Canadian "teachers of children" God Bless you. Winston S. Churchill" To which we can only say "Amen". The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26. Private family service to follow. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
