Dear Family of Charlie: I am so sorry about this awful tragedy I have just recently found out who Charlie was, and I am both saddened by his early death and inspired by the person he was. You must be very proud of him. The reason I am writing you is to let you know that someone was with Charlie when he died. I was travelling with my young daughter from Smithers, BC to the Dinosaur Park in Alberta when I was stopped by the driver of the other vehicle, moments after the accident. (I did not actually see the accident). I ran to Charlie, but as was reported his passing was very quick. I did the only thing I could at that point and that was to put my hands on him and just talk to him in that chance that he was still present or nearby. If something like this happened to someone I cared about I would want to know that he/she was not alone, so that is why I am sending you this message. As an avid cyclist, I cycled across Canada last summer following much of the same route that Charles was riding. Charles's passion for cycling and adventure was truly evident in his writings and photos posted on his blog. On behalf of my family, I want to pass on my sincerest condolences to your family. Dear Caroline, Val, and Thoby I received a call this morning from Angie Killoran (and immediately thereafter from Cindy Barnett) with the devastating news of the death of your dear Charles. Please know that we are thinking of you, as are your many friends at LCS. I am sorry I was unable to attend the funeral service today. Although I did not know Charles very well, I remember meeting him when I was at your house for Guild business and when he attended LCS events and activities. He was much younger (and smaller) then and I can see now what a handsome young man he became and what a free spirit he was (solo bike trip from San Diego to Toronto- WOW!) I remember, Caroline, us talking about his UCC days and the similarities, and differences, between the two educational systems. He was obviously dearly loved and supported by you. Funny to read "The DoubleCross" blog and think of that strapping young man as "Charlie". Of course our memories are framed by experinces of years past and to us he is "Charles", much smaller, blonder, and with a hint of mischief in his eyes.
