Dear Eileen - We are both saddened to hear of Doug's passing - what a wonderful person he was, so full of love and laughter. We still often think of our early trips to Cuba, and also the Dominican, that we shared with both of you. Those were the best days, such fun with great people! Doug and I were cousins and we spent considerable time together in our early years. We shared the same grandparents, William and Mary Jane Hutcheson, who lived near my Brewers Mills home just outside Kingston. Doug often visited his grandparents so it was natural we saw a lot of one another and knew one another well. I was also a frequent guest in my Uncle Harmon and Aunt Luella's Kingston home in those early years. Theirs was a warm and welcoming place and I have never forgotten their never-failing hospitality. Aunt Luella was my father's sister, a wonderful mother, aunt, nurse -- loved by all who knew her. Doug was an usher at my wedding in 1953 and I was an usher at his a few years later. We enjoyed one another's company and did the things that boys do in their junior years. Fun and carefree times, with little responsibility I guess you could say. There could not be a better or more accurate description of the boy I once knew (a characteristic that obviously stayed with him throughout his life), than the observation in the newspaper obituary, "He enjoyed a wry sense of humor and chuckled over the truth of Wilfred Bion's quote 'He was loaded with honors and sank without a trace!' " That would be the cousin and boyhood pal I recall so vividly and so fondly. Doug had, perhaps, the best sense of wry humor of anyone I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Self-deprecating wit has its place. Doug knew how to use it effectively. I will miss him. My wife Norma loved his parents, shares my loss, and our sympathy is extended to all family members. Please accept my sympathy, which I extend to Cheryl, Michael, Eileen and families, on the loss of Doug. Psychiatry has lost a pillar of the psychiatric/psychoanalytic community here in Toronto, and at the University of Toronto. Doug, my former psychoanalyst, colleague and friend -- you will be missed. Your wisdom, understanding, insight and support has helped many, many people -- as patients, friends and colleagues. As an example of your humour, when I was struggling with the issue of returning to Ireland or not, your response was "Do you want to be a saint or a martyr?" Which thankfully led to me becoming a Canadian citizen! Doug, you will not be forgotten. May your soul rest in eternal peace.

It was my privilege to work with Dr. Frayn for over a decade in his early days at the Clarke. Doug was a superb clinician and was able to relate to patients of any background with respect humour and great medical care. Weekly meetings were filled with extraordinary teaching and team collaboration - all taking place with efficiency and humour. He was my mentor and I appreciate all he taught me.
Personally I remember the wonderful Halloween parties with costumes of flowers and bees, superman and a phone booth and a Toulouse Lautrec waitress. Doug also provided help to many including myself in finding a spiritual path out of difficult times. Deepest sympathy to Cheryl, Chris , Michael, Eileen and the family on your loss. Doug was one in a million.

Dear Cheryl and family, We join you and your family in mourning the loss of your father. Doug Frayn was for us a valued friend and important colleague. Fred worked closely with him at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry. He was Mary Kay’s consultant when she was becoming a training analyst and they worked together in the Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Doug was a fine clinician and teacher who inspired both his colleagues and his students. He will certainly be missed professionally. We will miss him personally as well as professionally. We had a long visit with him on June 28, he showed us pictures of you and your family and spoke so proudly about his grandchildren. What a beautiful family you have. We do extend our condolences to you who will miss him even more. We have fond memories of our association with you when we were at 338 Inglewood Drive and benefited from your help. Both of us regret that you are now coping with the loss of your father. Dr Frayn supervised me three decades ago , when I was pursuing analytic training in Toronto. Coming from London every two weeks had its share of commuting woes, my car breaking down on the Gardener one time. After I had arranged towing etc I arrived frazzled and late for my session. Doug gave me a coffee , settled me down , and waived his fee , saying "this one's on the house". I have never forgotten his kindness and to this day think of him whenever I "pass it on" and waive a fee for someone in distress.

Our sympathies to the family members.Although not close in the recent years we knew Doug very well. In his younger years he was frequently a guest at our house and we spent many an evening with Doug at his abode. I recall when he was deep into Karate and qualifying for a black belt.He was concerned as to how that might be interpreted by his training analyst. His water colour paintings were delightful and his writings were enjoyed greatly. He will be missed
