Obituary of George William Burgess
George William (Bill) Burgess
1923 - 2015
Our wonderful, charming, generous, witty and loving father passed away at home in Toronto on Sunday, June 28 in his 92nd year. A true English gentleman, Dad was born in the gatehouse of the Priory in St. Osyth, Essex, England. Predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Dad will be forever loved and missed by his daughters Patti (Paul) and Wendy (Brian), and his much loved grandson, Christopher.
Dad served in the Royal Tank Regiment during the Second World War. Following the war, he worked briefly for the Admiralty in London before moving to Canada in 1947, arriving on what was then known as Dominion Day. He settled in Toronto and began a successful career in business administration and management with Canada Packers that would last for over four decades. While semi-retired, he continued to work as a consultant for several years.
Once fully retired, Dad enjoyed travelling with England, France, Italy and Toluca Lake, California among his favourite destinations. He remained active, writing articles for his Parish newsletter in England and, in fact, his last trip overseas was to attend the dedication of a choir stall which he donated to his family church of St. Peter and St. Paul. In his later years, Dad continued to enjoy visits to the country home in Prince Edward County.
Our heartfelt thanks to his caregivers, Dr. McKnight, Dr. Cellarius and Dr. Shapiro and, in particular, his nurse Ashlee Collier who held a special place in Dad's heart.
In keeping with his wishes, no service will be held. A private Remembrance will be held later this summer. Should you wish to honour Dad's memory, donations may be made to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care or the Salvation Army.
