I met "Uncle Jack" through my friend, his niece Sarah McCallum. He was well into his retirement but I learned that he also new my Father, as they were colleagues at O.I.S.E. before it was rolled into the University of Toronto. Thanks to my friendship with Sarah, i was welcomed at a number of Jack's and Dawna's Boxing Day family parties. I was pleased to be welcomed as if I was part of the family.
Jack meant a lot to my good friend Sarah, and through her, I came to think of Jack as my "uncle" too.
God Bless.

I was privileged to know Jack at three times in my career. He and I were elementary teachers together in the North Vancouver school system in the 1950's and 60's. We completed our undergraduate degrees together, part-time, at UBC. We were promoted a number of times at the same times and I was privileged to have Jack as my vice-principal at Balmoral Secondary School, prior to his departure to the University of Alberta. I later had the pleasure of Jack as colleague for two years at. OISE in the late 60's. Stated simply, Jack house was a great friend. My condolences to Tim, Patti, Jenni and their families. I began teaching at OISE in 1980, always on a part-time basis. I got to know Jack during this time and in fact after he retired from time to time at OISE. Always, always a true gentleman, great presence and great class. It was truly a pleasure to have met him. They don't make them any more like Jack. His radiant smile says it all. Marvin Zuker.

Granddad loved to travel. Even more so he loved to travel with Grandma. They loved Europe but his undisputed favourite place was Asia. Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore. He even lived for a time in Thailand while he worked on a contract for the university there.
My understanding is they tried twice to go to China and both times the world conspired against them. I only know how the first trip was thwarted. I can remember Granddad distinctly telling me about sitting in his hotel room in Japan holding his plane tickets to China for the next day watching the Tiananmen Square protests unfold on television.
Finally, I his late seventies he and grandma decided to go with a tour group for 3 weeks from Beijing to Hong Kong, their third attempt. Afterwards he referred to it as the greatest trip they ever took. His eyes would light up when he talked about it and his enjoyment at telling you the details was infectious.
Here's the strange part: He hated Chinese food. In fact he didn't like Asian food in general. I'm not sure what they ate on previous trips, but when in China the tour served a western breakfast. Granddad at a huge one each day before essentially fasting (he might eat some rice later) as both lunch and dinner were regional Chinese fare. For three weeks this went on. How he lasted I can't imagine, but it was what he wanted, and if it came down to strength of will with Granddad the other guy had very little chance.
I wonder if he ever got them to make a proper martini on that trip. If anybody could it would have been him.

Jack and I first met in 1967 when I joined the Educational Administration Faculty at OISE. Jack had been there for a year or so. Right from the beginning, we established a close professional and personal relationship, and that was maintained almost to the present day. Jiemei and I visited him last October when we were in Toronto. Jack, of course, rejected the use of computers and emails so we actually corresponded regularly by exchanging letters, kind of a forgotten art. I even came to be able to decipher his handwriting which was only barely legible. When I think of Jack and our relationship, though, it is not the last ten or fifteen years that I dwell upon but rather the heady and really exciting early years when we were young, and OISE was young, and we felt we were doing something important and something that could have an impact. We did joint projects together, traveled to conferences and meetings, consulted, argued, planned and most often with a great sense of involvement and attention. It doesn't happen so much these days but our Department faculty was close knit in the early days so that our professional and personal lives were all intertwined. Even today when members of that group gather we rekindle some of that special feeling. Jack's family was always important. I remember having Patty as a baby sitter for our young kids who now are in their early forties. Jack was always proud of his three children, supporting, worrying, experiencing sorrow when there was difficulty and joy in times of success. I appreciate that Tim thought to call in Victoria the day after Jack's passing. Jack and Dawna and Jiemei and I exchanged visits many times. We even went twice to Las Vegas, even though I think Jack stayed mostly away from the tables. But we surely had a great time, both then and during other trips. And for sure Jack and Dawna liked to travel, literally covering the world. They liked good food, both in the best kind of restaurants and in meals prepared at home. Jack liked to cook actually. He liked to drink, too, and in that I was able to join him from time to time, to say the least. So Jack had a long and interesting life, full of activity, accomplishment, variety, and fun, as well as times of difficulty which he accepted as part of life. I guess, along with Glenn Scott, he was my oldest and closest colleague and friend during all those Toronto years and beyond. It won't be the same without him. Ed Hickcox

Our condolences to your extended families. I have many fond memories of your Dad (my uncle) when you all lived on the West Coast so many years ago. He was always cheerfull and had a ready smile whenever he greeted us. Over the last few years we had been exchanging Christmas cards and updates on family which helped to mitigate the fact that we had not seen each other for so many years. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
