Obituary of Charles Medland
C. Edward Medland, C.M.
July 6, 1928 - August 17, 2008
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ted Medland on Sunday, August 17, 2008 after surgery for a chronic heart condition. Ted's enthusiastic spirit, sense of humour, deep wisdom and love of life, will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. Ted was the beloved husband of Julie for 35 years, and loving father to his daughters Ginny Medland (Paul Green), Zoey Medland; his step-sons Brian Eby (Andrea), and the late Stephen Eby; by his grandchildren Alexandra and Samantha Eby and James Medland Dupont. He will also be fondly remembered by his sister Winifred (Gordon Hawks) and their children Sally and Tom Hawks.
Ted was born and raised in Toronto. He attended St. Andrew's College in Aurora for nine years and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1950. In spite of, or maybe as a result of, spending most of his time playing bridge at university, he went on to have a long and distinguished business career. Ted joined Wood Gundy in 1950 and was appointed President and CEO in 1972 and Chairman in 1976 until his retirement in 1988. During his Wood Gundy years he was President of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and served on many prominent Canadian boards. Ted continues to be recognized by the CIBC Youth Vision Program through the annual Ted Medland award.
After retiring from Wood Gundy he continued his board service and entered into other business ventures. He was a founding director and later Chair of the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan which achieved international recognition. He also served as Chair of Cadillac Fairview.
In addition to his many business accomplishments, he generously gave back to his community through his skills and experience. His wisdom and dedication benefited many community causes and in 2003 he was awarded the Order of Canada. Both in his personal and business life he valued integrity and trust in all his relationships. He was a mentor to many and touched people in a positive way.
His favourite passions outside of his family and many special friendships were his love of skiing, honing-up his bridge skills, and continuing to reinvent his golf swing. Some of his most enjoyable holidays were when skiing, golfing and bicycling in various parts of the world with family and friends.
The Medland family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. Anthony Graham and David Latter and the other wonderful doctors and nurses at St. Michael's Hospital and also, to our many friends for their support and good wishes.
A tribute and celebration of Ted's life will be held on Thursday, September 4 at four o'clock at GRACE CHURCH ON-THE-HILL, 300 Lonsdale Road, followed by a reception at the York Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ted to the Robert McRae Heart Health Unit, St. Michael's Hospital Foundation, 30 Bond Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5B 1W8, or to the charity of your choice.
