Obituary of Ronald White Chisholm
RONALD WHITE CHISHOLM Q.C.
Died on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in his 85th year, having given his family a year they didn't expect to have with him, and more great memories of his wit, courage, and love.
Ron was a graduate of Upper Canada College and maintained close ties with the school, becoming President of the UCC Old Boys' Association and a Member of the School's Board of Directors. He completed his education at the University of Western Ontario and Osgoode Hall, before embarking on a Law career in 1956. He loved his work and took pride in helping people during their most difficult days.
Between 1968 and 1982, Ron was a major shareholder and Director of Ronald A. Chisholm Limited Commodity Merchants in partnership with brothers Tim and Peter. The path set in those years enabled the Company to become a leader among agricultural trading firms across the globe.
Ron had a passion for hockey, co-founding the Don Valley Hockey Organization, overseeing development of the first arena at UCC, and becoming a member of the Board of Directors and investor in the Toronto Toros of the WHL. He was also an avid curler and developed lifelong friendships at the Granite Club, along with an unending supply of stories that he could embellish.
Ron had an abiding love of Muskoka and mahogany boats in particular. He and his brother, Tim, shared this passion, and occasionally shared a boat. Ron passed both loves down to his children and grandchildren who will think of him every boat ride they take and every jump off of the boathouse or run into the water from the dock of the cottage he built on Lake Joseph.
Of all his life's work, "Twink" cared most deeply for his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara and his children, Stephen (Jane), Andrew (Laurie), Barbara (Tom) and David (Meredith) who brought ten beautiful grandchildren into the clan, Jennifer, Geoffrey, Gillian, Thomas, Lauren, Fiona, Madeline, Sydney, Heidi and Elise. He is also survived by his brother Peter.
Ron was predeceased by his son, Robert, and brother, Timothy.
There will be a private family interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, after which the family will welcome friends and relatives at Rosedale Golf Club on Friday, June 19 at 12:30 to 3:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gastrointestinal Clinic, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or the Muskoka Conservancy.
