My condolences to the family. Jack was one of the people in my career that influenced me even though we were never in the same centres and he was never officially my teacher. We became friends early, and shared ideas about patients and the importance of medical humanities. We talked and shared writings about medical education, and I valued his advice and views about deanship. He was a formidable mind, but one of the most gentle spirits, a genuinely kind and generous gentleman.

Hello, Jack was my advisor/mentor at MacMaster Medical school from 1976 to 1979. I asked him to guide me through my journey to become a doctor after seeing him talk at Grand Rounds in my first year. Over the three years of my training, we spent many hours together in his clinics, office and hallways talking about caring for our patients.the people in our lives and ourselves. He was the mentor I had always wished for and the doctor I hoped to be in the future. His kindness, respect and warmth for his patients and families was always an inspiration for me then and throughout my career. During the past 38 years of my career,I would frequently ask myself "What would Jack do/say in this most difficult situation?". He was an incredible role model for communicating with patients, families and people in and outside of medicine. When I came back to Canada a few years ago to work at the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai, I talked with him on the phone and we planned to get together. Unfortunately, we were not able to. My sincerest condolences to Ann and to all of the others who cared very much for this wonderful doctor, mentor and friend.

In the mid 60's at UWO Medical School we were privileged to have the distinguished Dr Laidlaw give a lecture to our third year class. We were all struck by his humanity and professionalism. We all wished we could hear more from this distinguished Professor. Professor Ramsay Gunton, himself a very distinguished Professor of Medicine and a former colleague of Dr Laidlaws at Toronto organized the visit. Dr Gunton also passed away this year. No doubt there are both still studying together and sharing various medical journals, always staying up to date.

Dear Ann, I was very sorry to hear about Jack. My thoughts are with you and Kate at this difficult time. You and Jack were very kind to my father (Norman) when he was recuperating in Toronto from heart surgery many years ago, and it helped us all greatly when you invited him to stay with you during that time. Love, Michael (Berlis)

Dear Ann and Kate, Please accept my sincere condolences. It was an honour to care for Dr Laidlaw over the past year. He was a remarkable man who had a profound impact on our team. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet him. As I entered the Queen lobby this morning, it occurred to me that Tuesday and Thursday morning shifts will never be the same. Take good care of each other - we are all thinking of you. Alison

Dear Anna, Fay and I extend our deepest sympathy. I have been abroad in the past month and learned of Jack's passing upon my return. Jack was a gentleman and a scholar. We connected on various endeavors for almost 50 years. He was an excellent endocrinologist and a superb leader in his various capacities. I remember him particularly when we were both on the MRC peer review committees for a number of years. Jack will be greatly missed- he was always great fun to be with. With our deepest condolences, John & Fay Dirks

I would like to extend my sympathies to the family on Dr Laidlaw's passing. My father and I were patients in the Clinical Investigation Unit at TGH and were the subject of "Jack's" landmark paper on primary aldosteronism. Until recently, Dr Laidlaw would make social calls to me yearly just to see how I was doing. I will miss his kind and reserved manor. We have lost a great physician and caring gentleman.
