It was such a shock to learn of your sudden departure. Like turning a corner and being ambushed with a sword plunged through my chest. It made no sense. I had just spoken with you. For the first few days I was praying that you had orchestrated a somewhat sick prank. Unfortunately, your sense of humour had not sunken to the new low I'd hoped it had. We've been friends for almost 27 years, a little more than half my life. I'm having difficulty imagining a future without you in it. The world will be far less enjoyable without the incredible, the amazing, the absolutely unforgettable Don Berns aka Dr. Trance. I will miss your presence, your humour, your voice, YOU. I certainly would never have thought that if this day ever came, I wouldn't be able to attend your funeral. To pay my respects to someone who was such an important part of my life, someone I was so close to for so long, who meant so much to me and I to him. But, I wasn't "invited", and I don't know why. I am aware of others who didn't know you nearly as well who were. I am so sorry my friend, that I could not be there for your final farewell. It hurt me terribly. But of course, I know this had nothing to do with you and that you would have wanted me there had it been your choice. It comforts me to know that you are everywhere now and that you know I am grieving your passing with every piece of my broken heart. It also brings me great joy to know that you are now at peace with our creator and are most certainly dancing "into the light". It won't be long before we meet again, my friend. Until then, play your giant heart out at that great gig in the sky, but wait for me before you play 'our song'. Oh, and don't forget to put me on the guest list ;) I love you, Don. Always have, always will.

I had the privilege of actually meeting Don in FL in January 2009 while he was vacationing nearby. I treasure the short time I spent with him, and the fond memories of a funny, frank, and fabulous person. His impact is global, and he is greatly missed. No one could ask for a truer friend than Don. Warm and generous, his presence filled any room he entered. His voice was commanding and unmistakable, a pleasure just to listen to. His laugh could rattle the windows. I can still hear it now. He was a man with deep passion and many talents and he lived life on his terms. He squeezed great joy out of each day and shared that joy with all who were fortunate enough to be around him. We’d been friends since we worked together in Pittsburgh radio. Over the years I visited him in Toronto, and he visited me in Colorado. We saw hockey games and Cirque de Soleil, hit casinos and even a few bars. We spent a decadent several days in Vancouver with another now-departed friend, fellow Pittsburgh alum Jay Stone. We traded emails several times a week for as long as there’s been email, up to and including last Saturday. I will miss Don every time I check my mail and find there’s not one from him. I got to see Don as Dr. Trance at a couple of raves and a few other club dates during my visits and I was blown away to see his mastery of the music and the crowds. His mixes were truly a case of the whole being far greater than the sum of the parts. You could feel the genuine affection from the partiers when they came up to talk to him. The “I Love My Willie” shirt you see him wearing on the numuzk page was my birthday present to him in 2001. http://numuzk.com/2015/03/don-berns-also-know-as-dr-trance-passed-away-sunday-march-1st/ He had that totally-off-the-wall sense of humor that endeared him to everyone. I share his Python/Firesign-based warp and we could spend hours batting one-liners back and forth. There was no reference to any 1950’s or 60’s pop lyric too obscure for Don. He would usually start singing the next line of the song! He’s the only other person I knew who knew all the words to “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight.” Our duets could frighten people! So far I have found five different web sites paying tribute to Don, not counting this one. I’ve enjoyed reading so many posts from all the people he touched over the decades. It’s a testament to the man how many people posted who never even met him but were touched, even changed, by Don’s sharing spirit and amazing talent. Many others who hadn’t been in contact for years still remembered the influence he had on their lives and careers. Another Pittsburgh friend, Clarke Ingram, emailed “Would that when my time comes I go as quickly and am remembered as well.” I consider myself privileged to have been Don’s friend for some 35 years. He brought laughter and joy wherever he went, and I enjoyed that radiance for more than half my life. I will miss him greatly. He was a loyal friend, truly a soulmate. We could tell each other anything. I’ve never known anyone else like Don Berns and I know I never will. Truly a unique creation. God speed, my friend!

My friend died. Just like that. Gone in the blink of an eye. I loved my friend. I still do, probably always will. He was larger than life, funny, kind, wise, musical & he loved fiercely. I like to think that over the 20+ years that we knew each other, he loved me fiercely too. He didn’t always agree with my choices but that never stopped him from being on my side. I lost my way for a while some time ago but he never lost sight of me. When I was sick he bombarded my time line on FaceBook with funny videos and never stopped telling me that everything would be OK. He was right. He touched so many people across so many walks of life. This was his way. An actor, a DJ, a radio star, a lover, a son, a friend, to oh so many of us. He leaves a huge hole in so many lives. He leaves a huge hole in mine. Only last Friday did he post one of his funny videos on my wall. I like that. I like that towards the end I was in his thoughts. I will miss you Mr.Berns. We all will. The world just got a little smaller today. All my love, my love. xx

I will always remember Don as a kind and gentle man, who was always the best friend anyone could have. Even though we saw each other rarely, we maintained our friendship for 47 years and I will miss him terribly.

Well Don, this will be the last time I post on your "Face Book page", and sadly there will be no witty rebuttal from you. I will greatly miss that, and your friendship. I have no doubt that you're regaling a whole new audience somewhere now. Warm up that crowd for us, friend!

Bigger than life, that was Don. He always called me the wife of his heart, and I felt the same about him. I'm sure Hunter S Thompson had Don in mind when he wrote: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Holy Sh**! What a ride!!!" I believe Don is skidding in! He lived life to the fullest, and used up whatever hours the days gave him. He was much loved, well respected, mentor to many, loved by all. Sleep well, my love The wife of your heart Ros

Don Berns will be missed by anyone fortunate enough to have known him. He was a larger than life kind of guy who was a good and loyal friend. You always heard that voice joking laughing or just sharing some music interest. Rest well my friend till we meet again.

We were deeply saddened by the news of Don's passing. Don delivered meals for Caledon Meals on Wheels for the last 2 years and was loved by staff, fellow volunteers and the clients he delivered meals to. His wonderful spirit and kind way will be greatly missed. Our heart felt condolences to Don's family and friends.

My sincere condolences to Don's family and friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Don while doing a community theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and came to know what a fine human being he was. Dedicated, funny, sweet and thoughtful all describe Don. We bumped into each other a couple of times since then and he had a ready smile and attentive ear.. You've created a lot of good around you Don and will be missed. Sincerely, ~ Marie

Don...you were bigger than life both in stature and presence. Your battle of wits and sarcastic zingers was one of the great things I will always remember. Your laugh was contagious, your friendship was priceless. Although we only crossed paths at the theatre, you will be missed by many yet remembered by all. Rest in Peace, spin the music, command the stage...until we meet again!
