John was a mentor, a friend and an inspiration to me as a young union activist in the 1970s and 80s. His legacy lives on in countless ways that the lives of working people were improved because of his persistent intelligence and ability to express the aspirations of the labour movement in the late 20th century.

Dear Anne, Laura & Martha, I had the privilege of working with John when he served as Research Director at the OFL. I remember his passion, his commitment & above all his session of humor! The OFL was an ardent & prolific advocate for workers under John's leadership. I did not know about his wartime service, nor the fact he once lived in MB - as did # of his contemporaries in union research. I regret I won't be able to come to Toronto this weekend to pay tribute to John in person. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Hi there, I didn't know John Eleen at all, but my mother - Helen (Jack) Smith shared his obituary with me this morning. She told me that his widow, Anne, was friends with my grandfather - Rev. James D.C. Jack. Mom shared the obit with me because my husband, Kevin Dorse, worked for the federal NDP for many years, and she wondered if their paths had ever crossed. They hadn't, but John's obituary warmed my heart so much. It is so inspiring to hear of the good, good work done for social justice in years gone by. His dedication to the NDP, to the labour movement, to social justice is inspiring. I also appreciate the thanks to Tommy Douglas - it is my sincere wish that all Canadians could make the connection between the personal and the political so clearly. I will make a donation to Evangel Hall (where my mom used to work - small world!) in John's memory, with thanks for a wonderful life lived in pursuit of God's kingdom here on earth. Know that the thoughts and prayers of me and my family are with you at this time. Sincerely, Laura Smith

My I extend my deepest condolences to the family of John Eleen. A true friend of working people for all those years, intelligent, compassionate with a sense of empathy he applied to all those he worked so tirelessly for. When I first met John, I was so much younger, and had a hunger to learn all I could from role models such as John and the leadership he provided so selflessly. Whenever you read anything John had put his name to, and even documents that didn't have his name attached to them on behalf of working people you could always tell it was John's work, just based on the passion he had to right the many injustices facing working people. John made our province and country a better place to call home, his contribution to our society and to his ethnic roots will never be forgotten, nor should his efforts go untold by those who knew him. Go Rest Easy My Friend, your time here on Earth has passed, but your memory will live on.

John was a friend of the family and deeply admired for his strong commitment to labour issues and progressive change in all forms. As a friend of my father, I too enjoyed on countless of occasions listening to and discussing issues near and dear to John's heart and the labour movement. I seem to recollect that one of his kids married Canadian actor John Vernon's son. Something I kibitzed him about as I was a fan of the Dirty Harry and Animal House movies that John Vernon starred. My mom and I last saw John at the OFL retirement diner for Irene Harris. John, I know you are watching and listening. Do me a favour and say hi to my dad. You and Wally can now catch up on what's been happening politically.
