Obituary of The Honourable Donald Steele
The Honourable Donald R. Steele, B.A.Sc, QC
Don passed away suddenly in Toronto on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara (née Pollock) of 56 years, his daughter Victoria of Ottawa, his sons Mark (Eva) of Toronto and Douglas (Elizabeth) of Aurora and his grandchildren Claire, David, Michael and Stephen. He is predeceased by his brother Jack and his parents Harold and Gladys Steele. Born in Toronto, Don attended Upper Canada College and received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto. In 1949, he graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School. He practiced law with the firm McMaster Montgomery as a general practitioner with a speciality in municipal and land development law. Among his many clients was the Municipality of Etobicoke. In 1976, Don was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario (High Court Division) where he served until his retirement in 1998. Apart from his family, Don enjoyed golf, skiing and world travel with summers in Muskoka and winters in Collingwood. He was a proud Past-President of both the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club and the Osler Bluff Ski Club. At Don's request, a gathering of family and friends will be held to celebrate his life at the BADMINTON AND RACQUET CLUB, 25 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto on Thursday April 19 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The family extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Eric Kotzer, Dr. Charles Chan, Elnora Bennett and the Integracare team.
