David has been a member of the Arts & Letters Club for so many years that for me, he will always be associated with the Great Hall full of people for the regular Friday "TGIF" buffet lunch. In my mind's eye, he and his fellow veteran, George Weber, occupy one of the tables near the stage, sharing stories of bygone days...A kindly, gentle presence, he will be missed.

Marlene, David, and their two children, Sarah and Eric, lived on the same street in Montreal West as my young family in 1971--my daughter and Sarah were both two years old. I vividly remember the first time I met David--he showed me some of the artwork he would be selling as part of a new business he and Marlene had formed: D. & J. Ritchie, Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers. I was deeply impressed with his charm and knowledge; and Marlene seemed to me to be able to do anything! We all became fast friends. Marlene and I helped each other occasionally with childcare, and their business occasionally hired me. When their business moved to Toronto, and my family moved there, too, a while later, we continued our association. Reading David's book this autumn was like stepping through a time portal, so accurately had he portrayed the story of their auction house. He was a remarkable man, and he leaves us all richer for having known him.

I have many memories of Uncle David - at the auction house, at home in Whitby and at many restaurant dinners over many years. And I knew Uncle David before I can even remember!
When I think of Uncle David this morning, it's his voice that comes most readily to mind. He had a very deliberate way of speaking that I found soothing and reassuring. When I was a little child, it seemed particularly impressive - very knowledgable and dignified.
I always felt welcome in your family and loved - I feel very grateful for the way you held me in your arms, your hearts and your homes over many years. I am holding you in my heart at this sad time.

David & Marlene Ritchie have been a part of our lives as long as I can remember. My father who was part of the auction scene was at an auction at Ritchie's the night before he died. Only appropriate. He considered the Ritchies close friends. I sat beside Mr. Ritchie at a charity event not so long ago and my husband Allan wrote the Foreword for his book. He was a true gentleman and someone who will be missed in the art world. RIP, Mr. Ritchie. You will be missed.

Mrs. Ritchie and family-- I remember Mr. Ritchie so clearly from my year working for Ritchie's in 1980-81, and am sorry to know that he's gone. I think of him as a kind, "old world" gentleman who embraced the excitement of the auction world. He seems to have been a man who forged his own path with integrity, honour, and a sense of humour. Please accept my sincere condolences.
