Sandy is no longer with us, but memories of this kind man remain. I cannot but remember his smiling face and his fond attitude when he was greeting me each time I would go to work at 122, The West Mall, back in the eighties. Sandy would walk in the shop or through the offices, greeting everyone with a generous smile, a smile that would make you feel important to him and to his enterprise. He made you feel an important link in the operation of the Electrolyser Corp., no matter if you were a humble technician, a welder, a floor Sweeper, an engineer or else. It was always an honor to be asked by Sandy how things were going on such and such projet or to be asked a technical opinion that made yourself feel as if he you were the brightest man on Earth, as if you were the one who had The answer. Yet, Sandy's breadth of engineering knowledge was so vast that at times, one would think he would ask you such questions only to make you feel important. He had an innate sense of sociability that was contagious. No matter the size of the problem at hand, he would remain positive and would instill in people (whom he all considered as colleagues) and everlasting drive and commitment. Great respect be forever given to Sandy. Ray Lachance

Dear Clayton, I remember your Dad, not for his many accomplishments, but for his many kindnesses to me and his modesty. He did so much for so many with no expectation of reward or recognition - a true leader! Very sad news but your Dad leaves an extraordinary imprint. Ann

I had the privilege of meeting Sandy through business and I have the highest regards for him as a business man and visionary. He was a true inspiration to me and he always will be. His vision of the future of our world and his efforts to advance clean energy left an incredible impression with me. Through his kind words and actions he instilled values such as honesty, generosity and integrity. Since English is not my mother tongue, I would like to borrow a quote from Jim Rohn which I feel describes Sandy’s leadership: "The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly." Sandy was a true leader whom I will always remember and admire! My thoughts and prayers are with you. Erika

Given the great sense of loss that I myself feel, I can empathize with the sadness that Sandy's family must be experiencing at this time.
Through the seventies and into the eighties, I was responsible for federally funded hydrogen energy programs managed by the National Research Council. Very early on I met Sandy. We shared a lot of ideas as the activities rapidly expanded and soon included cooperative R&D programs involving many other countries. Canada took a strong leadership role in this work. Sandy wouldn't have had it any other way. I was chair of the international hydrogen committee under the auspices of the International Energy Agency in Paris and Sandy succeeded me in that position. In 1984, Canada hosted a superbly successful international Hydrogen Energy conference as part of a series established by the International Association for Hydrogen Energy. Sandy was the chairman of that 1984 event in Toronto. Lots of people pulled a lot of rabbits out of many proverbial hats to position Canada at the forefront of international initiatives in the field. We all "did it right" because again, Sandy wouldn't have had it any other way.
Sandy was not perfect and he would be the first to admit to some failings. When stopped by the police for yet another speeding incident, he replied that he "was sorry but his mind was on something else". The police advised him to have cruise control fitted to his Volvo and he immediately complied. I flew the Atlantic several times with Sandy. He must have been speeding to the airport on some of these occasions as he was never at the gate when everyone else was there. Cutting it fine seemed to be a skill in which he took great pride.
Sandy's quiet demeanour did not fool anyone but we all worked better towards our common goals because of his approach. We got the message in spite of the mild way in which he expressed it.
It was a fun time and a productive one. Thank you Sandy for the many ways in which you made the whole energy initiative of those days better and bolder than would have otherwise been the case.
Never one to turn away from a challenge - you really did eat a whole pail of mussels in Belgium. I watched.

It is with great saddness that I heard of the passing of Sandy, he was a great man, gentle, kind, friendly, patient, great sense of humour and always taking the time to talk about any topic. I remember the trip to Mexico that James and I took with Sandy and Mary Alice as if it was yesterday and the laughs we shared or the times whether it be at the cottage, the "church" in Collingwood, or going to Tadenac. Sandy was the poster boy of calmness and patience and will never forget what a great pleasure to meet him and get to know him through James. Unfortunately I will not be able to make the viewing, funeral or reception as I am in Florida and will be in transit Friday afternoon. If there is a gathering later in the evening at the Pilot like we did 3 years ago, I will be there

To me he was Uncle Sandy from my earliest recollection. We grouped with you as family with one another, your father and mother godparents to some of us. He my favoured Uncle Sandy from these times of all our earliest years. An important figure in my life, your Dad exemplified that very rare combination of perceptive thought, creative genius, and always with a kindness, humour and generosity seldom seen with sharp an intellect. He was very tall. And we were very small. He never failed to reach for us, leaning closer with genuine intrigue, intent on giving his full attention to our tiniest voices below. He recognized the enormous significance of acknowledging every voice. Every contribution. I never saw that change in him over a lifetime, even as we too grow older, our voices strengthening with experience. Your father was a great man to all of us. We are here to learn from what they came to know in a lifetime of living - all the marvellous things they teach to us. You will together grow stronger each day, honouring in your own way those who have passed ahead of us. with our love and support Neetsie (Anita Heimbecker) and Lee Gilray

Clayton, Alex, Jamie, Andrew and family, We were saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. Sandy and Mary Alice were wonderful neighbours to us for all those years on Binscarth. We fondly remember your Dad with his quiet, gentle manner, always warm and friendly. We loved to see him in his hunting jacket and we remember the bb gun he used to try to shoot the pigeons from your roof and our hall landing window! His aim was not great but his intentions were the best. We last saw Sandy when we had a little neighbourhood party for the new family moving into our house. It was wonderful to see him again. Our deepest condolenses. Stanley and Barbara Beck

So sorry to hear of Uncle Sandy's passing. I was very pleased to see him, with Alex at my Father's internment this spring in Collingwood. We had a few minutes to talk that day, which was very inspiring, that he and Alex were able to make it to Collingwood. Condolences to all his family, and he was a very good friend to all of us Heimbeckers.

So sad. Sandy was brilliant and one of the kindest men I've ever known. He was indeed 'ahead of his time' in his understanding and committment to sustainability through renewable energy. He taught me so much. I will always treasure our conversations about nature, Georgian Bay, hydrogen power, trade, the economy and always the potential and responsibility of Canada in the world. He understood the importance of politics and the role citizens need to play in safeguarding our democracy and democratic institutions. He personified an 'engaged citizen'. His extraordinary ability to openly express his affection and love for his family was also remarkable for men of his generation. He will continue to set a standard for us all. He was a truly great Canadian.

To you, daughter, sons and broader family of dear Sandy. Accept my deepest condolences for the passing of such a remarkable, passionate, gentle, kind person, and certainly an affectionate dad as Sandy was. His devoted commitment to the enrichment of knowledge of environmental issues, his countless efforts and immeasurable contribution to the making of this world a cleaner and better place to live, all this and much more is like the branches of a strong tree. This is what I feel and want to express: A tall and well alive tree that will continue to grow through what he has done and instilled in the mind of many, during his long years spent with us. Sandy was a seed of great quality that developed in a fertile soil and produced beneficial fruits. May he rest in peace with the certainty that all he did was good and well. He leaves this world with saddened children, family and friends, but with tangible accomplishments, inspiring memories and durable thoughts on betterment of the life of us who are still here. Ray
