I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Beattie - I was in the drama club at Oakwood in the 70's and he was a wonderful man and teacher (I think of him every time people start coughing in the theatre - "they're bored!" We don't want that's" he would say). My thoughts are with you ....

In 1954 I came to Queen's University in Kingston as a 17-year-old high school graduate (Quebec only went to Gr. 12), facing an Ontario cohort who'd stayed in high school for an extra year of socialization. I was lost! But luckily for me, I made friends with Bob Bettie, Arts '57 (I was Arts '58). His never-failing friendship and kindness (a forecast for the generous teacher he'd become) helped me get through. I lost touch after 1957 (his graduation year), but met Bob 20 years later at a reunion in Kingston, where I now lived, married with two almost-teenagers. It was joyous to see Bob again, radiantly happy with his marriage and the birth of his 1st son, and telling of the delight he took in daily interaction with the young child's real personality revealing itself at a very young age, in response to love. So sorry to hear of Bob's end of life challenges, but if everyone's love and respect for his sweet kindness could help him get through, I have no doubt he had it in abundance over his married life and his teaching career. We'll never know how many lives he touched, but I for one am eternally grateful. My sincere condolences to his family. Eleanor Gunn (aka Williamson), Arts '58, Queen's U.

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He will also be well remembered as a wonderful, thoughtful neighbour to all of us and my mom Eileen on Hanna Road. We seemed to always catch up putting out the garbage or leaves, cutting the lawn or shoveling snow--your dad made those an occasion when we managed to get chatting. Steven and Christopher--all the best to you and your families--our paths are unlikely to cross, but both your parents are remembered so fondly.

I am truly sad to learn of Bob’s passing. Bob was very generous with his time, encouragement and support in particular with the UNESCO shows early in my career. Over the years, we shared a good many laughs during the sanity saving BBB rendezvouses, and I enjoyed his company at the Wednesday movies. I offer my deepest sympathies to Bob’s family at this difficult time.

I am very saddened at the news of Mr. Beattie's passing and send my deepest sympathy to his family. Mr. Beattie was my favourite teacher at Forster Collegiate in Windsor in the 60's. I was a member of his drama club, and what a wonderful and memorable time we all had taking part in the productions he organized. As others have said here, he strove for excellence, and even though we were just high school students, we all wanted to be outstanding for him. We adored him. He made high school a very happy time for me and so many others. Thank you, Mr. Beattie.

Mr. Beattie was that rare breed of teacher who saw more than just the student in front of him; he saw our struggles, obstacles and our fears but most of all he saw our potential. He instilled a confidence within that many of us carry to this day. A few years ago I had the opportunity to tell him how much I appreciated him as a teacher. I hope that knowing the profound impact your Dad had on so many will help carry you through this very sad time. My sincere condolences, Joyce English

Mr. Beattie (I could never get used to calling him Bob) was a remarkable teacher. He saw students as being so much more than just pupils in a classroom or performers in a production. He saw us as people; the obstacles we faced, the struggles we endured and most of all he saw the potential in each one of us. As students, we could always count on him to listen to our family problems, difficulties with other teachers and our hopes and dreams (no matter how far out). He gave sage advice, chastized us when we needed it and even shared the odd menthol cigarette!!
I am fortunate that a few years ago I had the opportunity to tell Mr. B all that he meant to my sister and I.
My condolences to the family and all the former students who were fortunate enough to learn so much from this man. A true teacher, mentor and gentleman.

I had the honour to know Bob Beattie as an outstanding teacher at Forster Collegiate, Windsor during the 60's and as a friend in Leaside during the 80's and 90's. He treated students with respect and in the drama club taught us to strive for excellence. When I moved to Leaside in 1985 I was so delighted to discover that he was my neighbour around the corner. My deepest condolences to his family. Your father made such a positive impact on many young lives.

Mr. Beattie was one of those memorable teachers who made an impact in student's lives. Mr. Beattie taught me at Forster Collegiate, Windsor in the 1960's. As a teacher, her was professional, thoughtful, fair, and challenging. We earned the respect and admiration of his students. He also directed the Drama Club and cast me as Tom Davenport in "Inherit the Wind". He taught us that it was not enough for people to say "That was good for a High School production", and directed us to a high standard of excellence - a lesson carried into my life. (I also learned that the play starts sharply 7 minutes after the advertised time!) We were sad when he left to move to Toronto. I am saddened to hear of his passing, but delighted in the memories of a great and memorable teacher. My condolences to the family.

My deepest condolences to Bob's family at this difficult time. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I was a student of his in the late 70s and early 80s. Bob had a huge impact on my life. He is the best teacher I ever had. He was passionate about the the theatre and it was contagious. He treated us like adults and assumed we could do the work. If I hadn't met him I wouldn't be an actor today. I still remember and use things he taught me all those years ago. I'm grateful for all he gave me. He will be sadly missed.

This is quite disheartening. He was one of the true Drama teachers that gave me and many in Theatre '55 the confidence to be ourselves. Learning the production, construction and how to take in instructions to pull off a performance was learned by this man. If you didn't like him,you really didn't understand his passion. But you had a respect for his what he brought to our acting lives, which eventually became a "Strong" part of my own confidence and focus of how I succeed in what why do to entertain today. My notable plays with Mr. Beatie: Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii Play it Again Sam (he trusted me to play the role of Richard, a character that would speaking in Italian in a dreamed murder scene...me..speaking a mock Italian role at age 17!) And My most moving honored role... Raisin in The Sun...Walter Lee Younger! There are not words to express my gratitude to Bob Beattie for the valuable life lessons he shared with his students. I was blessed to be his student for two brief years in the early 80's and he changed me forever and for good. His students and the world are better for having shared time on earth with him. My deepest sympathies to Steven and Christopher and their families for the tremendous loss they must be feeling. Bob will never be forgotten.

It could not have been easy to have a father who gave so much of his life, and family time, to his students, but I want you to know that the time he put into our lives was not in vain. I am a teacher because of him. Our thoughts are with you as you go through this emotional time, and I thank you for sharing your father with us all.

Mr. Beattie was the kind of teacher that more than inspired you. He supported you, challenged you and genuinely cared for you. I had a lead in the play in grade 13. I tried out every year and ended up doing every role behind the scenes. But in grade 13, for some reason, I was given a lead role. After a few weeks it was then that I told Mr. Beatie I wasn't sure if I could do the role. He looked me right in the eye and boldly said.... Of course you can! Then he walked away. When I was working as a journalist, I took a job as a TV anchor. I was 26. I returned to see Mr. Beattie for help with my delivery. And when I asked him... you think I can do this? His reply was the same. Throughout my career whenever I doubt myself, I recall the strength in his words... and I remember.... Of course I can. Thank you Mr. Beattie. Your strength changed lives.

It was very sad to hear of Bob's departure. We extend our heart-felt sympathy to all in the Beattie and Wylie families. For me, it is the loss of a life-long friend. It is memories of piano lessons together, the warm welcomes of Bob's Mom, high school proms and fraternity antics, weddings and occasional gatherings after that, and the joy of knowing wonderful Pat. He was a great friend, always interesting and contentious to chat with. I treasure the memory of our last time together, dinner in Niagara on the Lake in August. Your memories will be so much more vivid and precious. We are very sorry indeed for your loss.
