Mon cher John, Nous venons tout juste d'apprendre que ta mère Lois était décédée vendredi dernier. Micheline se joint à moi pour t'exprimer ainsi qu'à tous les membres de ta belle famille nos plus sincères condoléances. Nous sommes désolés d'apprendre une si triste nouvelle et nous partageons avec vous tous la douleur qu'un tel événement engendre même si vous saviez que la fin approchait. Je me rappelle vivement quand, vers 1970, elle m'avait accueilli à Mexico où j'étais de passage pour un congrès scientifique. Elle et Saul avaient été d'une grande générosité à mon endroit. Nous vous souhaitons tout le courage nécessaire pour passer à travers cette dure épreuve qui marque, pour vous, la fin d'une époque. Nous nous excusons de ne pouvoir assister aux funérailles. I met her only once, at your Toronto home, and was greatly impressed by her evident enjoyment of company and the interest she showed in every person she met, every topic of conversation. Such a vital, caring person will be greatly missed by the wider family as well as by you in particular.
