I was deeply shocked, when word of John's passing reached me here in Mexico. I was recruited by John some thirty plus years ago. Since we first met, I always considered him a friend that always kept in touch. We have served on several " Boards " together, and had many long conversations on how to grow new ventures. He will be greatly missed. He was a true gentleman. My deepest condolences to his family

I worked for John for many years. He was my first employer and set the bar high in terms of cultivating a positive work environment and encouraging both personal and professional development. He was also one of the kindest, most generous people I have met. He and his wife Martha hosted an engagement party for me and my now-husband many years ago at their house. It was a lovely evening with family and friends and is a memory I will treasure, along with those of our countless Armitage lunches (or Marketing Meetings as sometimes referred to), which often involved his kids and grandkids. John was truly a special man and will be sorely missed.

John and I met more than 40 years ago when I was a young lawyer in Montreal. John had recently founded Armitage & Associates. We stayed in touch over the years and found ourselves connecting through many avenues. John was a wonderful man, wise and a very good listener. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to meet and know him.

Very sad to read of John's passing. Our association goes back to 1958 when we met in Grade 10 at Knowlton High School. We were members of the 'geek class' of '58-59-'60. He had that devilish sparkle and smile even then and he was a helluva drummer too. We lost contact for many years as our lives diverged; he to Montreal/Toronto, me to Fredericton/Halifax. We chatted infrequently and swore to get together when I was in Toronto but alas, it did not come to pass. My loss for sure. He was always a gentleman and I am certain, a fine grandfather, father, brother and husband. To all of you, my sincere and deep sympathy. His huge network of great friends will miss him, I will miss him also, we had many memorable times together, school plays and class trips being a prime example. Farewell John. Peace.

How saddened I was to read of John's passing in yesterday's paper. I have known John since the early 80's and maintained regular contact and periodically met at Hy's for lunch. We chatted a couple of times in the past month as he picked my brain for suggestions of a mandate he was working to fill. John was a real gentleman and class act. I will miss his sage counsel. Although I have not met his family I want to express to them my sincere condolences. We all have lost so much. Sincerely, Frank Duffy

Chels & Mikey- I was so saddened to hear of Big John's passing away. Your dad was a very special man and was so very generous and kind to so many people. I, like so many others, was blessed to know him. I have many wonderful memories of him from so many years ago of him visiting us all in London or when we would all come up to TO & crash at the house. His wonderful smile and caring spirit will definitely live on through his beautiful grandchildren.
big hugs & kisses, Christine, Machine Marie

I had the privilege of knowing John for over 25 years and will cherish the memories of the time we spent together. He had a passion for his work and a truly genuine interest in people. I admired his business acumen and integrity. HIs ability to understand business issues and bring companies and people together was second to none. He has touched the lives of many in the Canadian business community in a very positive way. My deepest condolences to his family.

In 1984 John recruited me in to a senior position at Crown Life where I had a very successful career for the next 16 years. He always stayed in touch with me until just a few years ago. He had remarkable compassion. I was very saddened to open the papers today to learn of his passing. He was an amazing gentleman. My sincere condolences to all of his family.

To John's family, Though I have not met you, please accept my deepest sympathies at this very sad time. I was shocked to learn today of John's passing as, since the early 80's when I first met John, I have considered him a great and trusted friend and mentor. We worked closely together on several business assignments in Toronto and later in Montreal, but I always imagined that we would do still more together in a future which might find him relocated to Montreal, my home city today. I am presently out of the country but would very much appreciate knowing of the date and time of the planned celebration of his life in Montreal when hopefully I will be there and have the opportunity to meet with you. God bless all of you. You are already blessed having shared so closely in the life of this exceptional man. Ralph Loader

As a recipient of John’s mentorship throughout my career, I will forever be thankful for his sound guidance and the time we spent together. My phone call always landed me in his Yonge Street boardroom where he would sit with sharpie and paper, furiously mapping out a thought, next step or idea – and, of course, it was brilliant. John left an indelible mark on an entire industry, and we are all thankful for having him in our lives. He will be sorely missed, but his passion, dedication and commitment will live on in each of us.

I had the opportunity to meet with John many times over the past 25 years. It always seemed like we had just spoken yesterday when it might have been one year ago. We just picked up the conversation where it left off. I enjoyed dealing with him and always marveled at the way his mind seemed to be spinning a mile a minute but his words and thoughts were never rushed. My condolences and prayers are with the Armitage family, Steve Gesner
