It's interesting after nearly 40 years how one remembers the most unusual things. My memories of Dot centers around her generosity. My family had also just moved to Willowdale in 1970 and from what I recall by the early '80's I became friends with Jerome. I was much younger back then and being made me to feel like one of the family stands out most. Home cooked meals, a fragrant cup of tea, and the odd thought-provoking question!
I had the opportunity to share a couple of trips/vacations with Dot and Jerome. One was a ski trip to Mt. Tremblant. We stayed at a bed/breakfast for a few days. Jerome and I would downhill ski, and Dot would x-country ski the local trails. While Jerome and I went skiing, Dot spent the day on her own and like most 'kids' we just headed out the door that morning looking forward to skiing adventures. It was a really cold day, -20 C in the morning. When we got back that afternoon we asked what she did for the day. 'Oh I walked into town to pick up some groceries for dinner'. Town was 10km one-way. A very 'tough' woman was all I remembered.
Another trip was to Switzerland for Marcelle and Mikael's wedding in 1989, a couple pictures I've added. Much the same as before. There's nothing like having 'Mom' along to have a meal ready at the end of a day of skiing. In the back of my mind I also knew that she picked up a lot of $$ expenses we never heard about. These things she did and said I think we simply we took for granted. Perhaps the fact that her professional career as a Nurse had a lot to do with it, but regardless I have been the recipient of her generosity, and after 40 years of knowing her it is the thing I remember most about her.
