Obituary of John Mitchell

John David Mitchell May 13, 1940 - October 27, 2014. David passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital on October 27 surrounded by family and is now at peace. Beloved husband and best friend of 50 years to Malle, devoted father to Craig (Suzanne), Kristine and Michael, and loving grandfather to Oliver, Gavin, Quinn and Carter. Predeceased by parents Jack and Margaret Mitchell, and sister Nancy Mitchell. Born and raised in Lawrence Park, David attended Lawrence Park Collegiate and Ryerson University. David spent over 25 years with Crain-Drummond, leaving as Vice President of Sales in 1995 to become a Certified Financial Planner for nearly 20 years, most recently with Manulife Securities. David loved annual family trips to Cape Cod and Sanibel Island and, closer to home, taking a long daily walk, rain or shine, through the streets of Leaside and North Toronto. Never to be forgotten are trips he took with Malle and close friends Ed and Gwen to England, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Russia, Malle's native Estonia, and visits to Kristine and Oliver in Australia. Loyal friend to many, David enjoyed time with friends at annual golf and curling tournaments in Quebec, biking holidays, visits to Collingwood, poker nights, mens' hockey nights and weekends with friends on Fletcher Bay and with family on Leonard Lake. A former Toronto Marlie, David loved the Toronto Maple Leafs (even if they didn't return the favour with any recent Stanley Cup Parades). David shared his love and knowledge of sports with his children and grandchildren by joining in street hockey, throwing a ball in the park, and always cheering them on from the sidelines. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2nd. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3rd. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to a cancer charity would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
