John Stewart, 7th Toronto Regiment RCA posted a condolence
Thursday, October 23, 2014
One of Canada’s great treasures, he lived with honour and passion and was a role model for every officer who had the privilege of knowing him. In the Army, he is to this day a legend whose record of service and ability to lead in war and peace was the envy of many. At the University of Toronto, he is revered among those of us who watched him painstakingly and lovingly create the Book of Remembrance in the Soldiers’ Tower, so that no alumnus who served and sacrificed their lives would ever be forgotten. For those of us who had the pleasure of fishing with him during Outdoors Club trips to Loon Lake, those memories are brilliant treasures. For all of us, Ted’s passing is the deep loss of a dear friend, mentor, and inspiring gentleman. He was truly one of the best of the “greatest generation”. My sincere condolences to Ted’s family. May Ted rest in peace.

Our sympathies go to Janny, Sue, Peter and families as you say good-bye to a dear father. Back in 1965, we became neighbours to the Browns. As Ted was away on the peace keeping mission in Indo-China, and Peer was away a lot also, I would often be invited over to the Browns, with our two small boys in tow. Janny, Sue and Peter were immediately delegated to amuse the boys while Julie and I dealt with the issues of the day over a refreshing libation.
When Ted returned there were always celebratory dinners, welcoming Ted back, and perhaps celebrating the fact that Julie had managed the family very well in his absence. Our friendship has been a treasure over the years.
We spoke to Ted just after his last Birthday and he was in fine spirits.
A very fine and accomplished man.
With fond memories,
Peer and June Norgaard.

My sincere condolences to the family and to everyone that served or knew Ted. He was a true gentleman and a soldier worthy of his hire. I met him 56 years ago at Camp Petawawa where he commanded the Brigade. He was respected by everyone of his men and inspired all of us who served under him to do our best for our country as he did. As a member of the Outdoors of the Royal Canadian Military Institute he outdid many of us in fishing (a sport that he loved). We will remember him!
