Obituary of Anne Delicaet
ANNE MARGARET MARY KUNA DELICAET B. Ed., B.A.
On Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, in her 85th year. Beloved wife of 37 years of the late Leonard George Joseph Delicaet. Loving mother of Mary-Kathleen (John Young), Kendra Anne Francesca (David Almasi) and Leonard Jacques (Simona Ponzo). Adored and adoring Baba of Nicholas, Talitha and Serena Young, Matthew Almasi, and Chiara Delicaet.
An inspired and inspiring educator, Anne attended the Nova Scotia Teachers College, then taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Cape Breton before moving to Ontario to teach at Camp Borden, in St. Catharines, in Toronto, and later in Vancouver for both Catholic and public school boards. While working full time as a primary years specialist teacher, Anne attended night school to earn her B. Education and B.A. at the University of Toronto. To be the best teacher she could be Anne continually upgraded her skills, becoming an Ontario School Inspector, a Supervisor in Primary Education and Physical and Health Education, and worked toward the M. Ed. Anne developed textbooks for Canadian primary years students and taught teachers at OISE. She was a board member at the English Catholic Teachers Association, the Ontario Teachers' Federation and the Ontario Association for Curriculum Development. Anne also served as head of her region's union.
With her intelligence, drive, charm, and desire to help others, Anne was an exceptional fundraiser and volunteer. She served as President of the Canadian Opera Women's Committee, Chair of the Opera Ball, and as member of the boards of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the Providence Centre Foundation, SickKids-Operation Herbie, the Canadian Psychiatric Awareness Committee and the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, N.Y. Anne was active in numerous charitable organizations including the AGO, the Brazilian Ball, Water for Africa, the Canadian Centre for Film Studies, and the Newman Centre. Anne served for many years at Blessed Sacrament Church as a Sunday School teacher and minister of the Eucharist. She was honoured for her many contributions with the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.
Anne loved travelling the world with Len and their family. A great fan of opera, ballet, theatre and of wine collecting, these interests were frequently combined with her travels. Anne also loved to dance, garden, and read.
Anne had a unique gift of warmth, and she touched the lives of all she encountered with her friendliness, sympathy and concern for others. Her courage and strength were tremendously inspiring as she embraced life and focused on helping people. Anne was tireless in her generosity, giving her time, her energy, and her love to make the world a better place.
She was much loved and will be much missed.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21st. The funeral service will be held in BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH, 24 Cheritan Avenue (Yonge and Lawrence), on Wednesday, October 22nd at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Anne M. Delicaet Bursary at the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, or the Sunnybrook Foundation in support of the Breast Cancer Centre would be greatly appreciated.
