Faith Mitsumi, Shintani
Born to Mitsuru & Sumire Shintani
"Mitsumi" what a perfect name, the combination of both her Dad Mits and her Mom Sumi. A very happy, cute little Japanese Canadian newborn, a sweet, good-natured little girl.
Mitsumi and I grew up like brother and sister. Even though I was older, she taught me many things in life that one can only experience having a younger more mature sister. She was smart, clever, wise for her years, patient, understanding, accepting, never boasting. Always thinking of others first!
Mits loved to laugh. She had a very distinctive laugh, one that you could hear over and above the rest, a laugh that I'll always remember.
There are things that I will always remember about growing up in the same household as Mitsumi . Her school report cards were almost always straight "A"s - she rarely got "B"s and for me I was lucky to get "C"s. She was a very bright, well-behaved student.
She seemed to be good at just about everything. Even in recreational activities - when she got her first pogo stick she would bounce and hop for as long as she wanted. I remember timing her one time and she bounced for almost 20 minutes straight, laughing with me watching wanting to try. When it was my turn, I bounced for a whole 20 seconds. Mits would laugh again and say " Oh that's ok Tony. Try again." She was always patient and encouraging me.
There was a time when Uncle Bill was either working in North Dakota, or in Pennsylvania ( chick sexing). He made a phone call home - first talking to Auntie Su, to me, and then to Mitsumi, saving the best for last. After Mitsumi finished on the phone, she was all excited and said "Dad said he'll be home in ten minutes!" I was quite puzzled by the ten minutes, how was that possible, cause he was in Pennsylvania? There's no way he could make it back that fast!
But Mitsumi was very adamant. "My dad said he'll be home in ten minutes." And he was! It never occurred to me that he was calling from just down the road from Jim's Texaco, Lansdowne and College, sheesh! I remember the shock (how was that possible?) but more importantly I remember the joy and happiness!
Mitsumi took an interest in music and learned to play both the saxophone and guitar. She played in the high school band along with continuing to do well academically.
At sixteen she got her first moped - a motorized bike that she would ride around in the area of Lansdowne & College. Then a year or so later she ended up getting her first motorbike. I think it was a Suzuki 175.
Both her cousins, Vaughn Tanaka and Ted Chiba, also had motorbikes, only bigger and more powerful bikes, and they wanted Mitsumi to ride with them. They all got on their bikes with their helmets, Vaughn and Ted took off first, and even though they had the bigger bikes, Mitsumi caught up to them halfway up St. Clarens Ave. She loved riding!
Through her teens and into her young adult life, her other interest was softball. Many, many times we would go into the back yard and she would pitch, I would catch. She would throw around a hundred pitches each time and by the time we were done, my catching hand was very red. It hurt! She would throw so hard - she was a natural!
When she was 17 or 18, she got involved in a competitive league as a pitcher and did very well. I remember watching her pitch at that level and she would strike out many a batter. She was also a very good hitter. Uncle Bill would say she hit 3 out of 4 and sometimes 4 for 4. That's a 75-100 percent batting average. She had a gift!
Her very first car was a 1972 AMC Gremlin, burnt orange in color, standard transmission. Some people find it a little intimidating learning how to shift. Not Mitsumi!
Mits was always supportive of my choices. She would always listen, and I could see the wheels spinning in her mind, but she was never judging, and always caring. She had amazing character.

We are deeply saddened by Mitsumi's passing and want to share our most sincere condolences with those who loved her. We knew you too briefly, Mits. But even in that short time, we were immediately moved by your warmth and generosity. The joy and spirit with which you lived your life is infectious, and inspires the many people you touched. Those qualities continue to shine in Will & Michele, who we are honoured to know and call family. You remain in our thoughts and in our hearts.

I have been very blessed to have the pleasure of working with Faith many times over the last 16 years, and her amazing smile and strong kind words have brightened many rough days, with a simple look and a few soft well chosen words we under stood each other well.Truly one of a kind!
In the moments that my former employer was closing its doors,my thoughts went to if I could ,who would be the one person I would save? In one secound ,I had my answer-Faith.So I called the CEO to ask what can we do for Clients(no answer) then CFO again no answer! I then called my friend Faith,as always she took the time from her busy day to answer and I heard her soft voice "Hi Don how are you!" my response was "Not to good Faith, our company has chosen to close its doors.her first thought went to the great loss of all her friends-"how are ........."I quickly stopped her and said "Faith how can I help you?' Faith then asked me to pull all her work.......She had a silent strength and passion, always a sound thinker, she would politely listen, think, and respond, always very quickly.
Once she called me with an issue at 4:45 AM with another vendor (knowing me so well that I would be awake, another person might be upset at the early hour,I felt honored that she valued my opinion enough to call! Faith always had great stories of her children and her many on going projects at home and up at Balsam Lake, she put a rainbow on every day you spent with her, whether discussing a major issue or sharing a life lesson.
While our great loss is felt deeply,I can't help but think about the most enjoyable times we spent together. Many people go their whole life with out meeting and sharing time with a special person, one who's great wealth is measured by kindness, not dollars.Faith always shared her wisdom, her passion, and her comon sense,I will cherish her for that gift of our time together.Faith you are never to be forgotten.
Your Friend Don : ) Keep Smiling!

Years later when Mitsumi had children of her own, she still managed to find time in her hectic schedule for our own daughter, Tamiko, greatly enriching the young life of our daughter by taking her on many occasions either to live theatre or excursions to the African Lion Safari and Stouffville's annual Strawberry Festival along with her very accomodating and very lovely partner, Beverly Wells, and for this we will alwsy be grateful to Mitsumi, the wonderful, classy, witty, kind, vibrant, selfless and compassionate person we had come to know and love.

Many years ago when Mitsumi was a young girl, I would often see Mitsumi riding her bicycle along with her little dog, the cutest little fluff ball, Tammy who would always be perched on the cross-bar, and if there ever wa a picture definition to the word cute, this particular memory conjures up that image.. The two were totally inseparable.
As the years passed by, we had spent quite a bit of time with Mitsumi and her parents, our Uncle Bill and Aunt Su, all the while watching and witnessing as Mitsumi turned into a beautiful young lady. One thing for sure, there was never any pretense with Mitsumi, and she was one of very few people with whom I grew fond of and could trust.Mitsumi was true blue and an angel.
Among Mitsumi's many interests, music and the guitar were among them, and I remember we would spend time once in a while working on a particular piece titled "Spanish Romance", she just loved that partuclar solo and was very determined to learn the piece, and slowly learned the song note by note always with total enthusiasm and a huge smile of accomplishment across her face. It was a very carefree time during our lives, and she would go on to sing and play other songs smiling and laughing all the way.

Dear Rosita and William,
I want you to know that I'm sharing the agony and pain you are going through right now.
I want to comfort you with words … but there is no wonderful or magic words to heal the pain…losing a parent just hurts… the desperation the wound is immense, the emptiness you feel is invaluable… no one can comfort the sadness in your hearts. Crying is the only way to find consolation having time to grieve, having time for you alone with her, and having your dad around and the family and closest friends will also make it easier. The beautiful memories of mum will sooth you and slowly you will find as the days go by it will be easier to think of her and not cry so much but smile as she will smile back. Life is so precious we must celebrate every day! God bless you Rosita, William. We are thinking of you! love you so much!
