I was sitting in the departure lounge of the Grantley Adams Airport in Barbdos on the 17th October 2014 when my eyes fell upon Randall Bain whom went to TCS with me, and I immediately went over to him and gave him a huge hug, so happy to see him after so much time. Within the first two minutes of our meeting he asked me if I heard about Douggy. I asked him if he meant Doug McGregor of TCS. He said yes, and Randall announced that he had passed away suddenly while playing golf with Gail about 3 1/2 weeks ago. You could have toppled me with a feather with the news! Not only did I know Doug well, but he and Gail visited and stayed at my home in Barbados on two occasions since leaving TCS in 1980. It was also Doug who got me to attend the re-unions of 1990 and 2000. Doug was also my investment broker at N- Burns for a few years before I diversified my portfolio, and I had the utmost of trust in him and his years of sound financial advice. It is with an extremely heavy heart that I offer my deepest condolences to Gail and her family on the news of Doug's untimely passing. I also offer my apologies for finding out so long afterwards, and Randall is going to provide me with an updated link to help me keep in touch with our Class of '80. Memories of Doug's laughter on my porch while sampling the best of Bajan rum and hearing his enthusiastic appreciations of the sunsets we shared shall live on inside of me. The world has lost one of the better ones that came out of TCS! R.I.P. Douggy, we shall miss you.

I'm both devastated and so terribly sorry that I could not personally be there to return some of the support that Doug and the entire McGregor family have always so generously extended to everyone fortunate enough to have them as friends or neighbours. Doug was truly an exceedingly fine and extremely rare single-malt and an inspiring credit to his clan. I struggle to conceptualize this world without him. I feel so very fortunate to have had him as a friend and to have shared so many good times, memories and adventures with he and his family. Particularly our last get together this summer. Doug taught me how to persevere and laugh in the face of adversity, (with mixed results). Ironically, it is those inspired lessons of Doug's I now rely on to cope with the news of his tragically untimely departure. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends in the face of this greatest of adversities. We shall all miss Doug terribly, but he will live on in our hearts and inspire us forever. It is hard to describe the emptiness that a life cut short leaves in a circle of family and friends. We feel shock, sadness, misery ... we wonder why, we feel anger, we rage at the injustice .. but most of all we weep for the summer nights that will be less warm, less sunny and less interesting without the gentle soul of our friend Doug McGregor. My decade of memories are endless .. they way he marveled at our red maple tree ... the way he volunteered Mark's brawn to help shovel my driveway ... the way he reveled at Reed's unbridled spirit ... the way he marveled at Evan's latest fashion creation (despite the fact he couldn't tell a knit from a woven). Doug was quick with a joke ... quicker with an offer for a beer ... and an summer Saturday night institution on his front porch on Albertus Avenue. The solace in which we shelter ourselves during this storm of emotion is the 3 beautiful children that Doug and Gail have brought into this world. While his time with us was far too short, his legacy will live on in Mark, Reed and Evan!! Nancy and I will line up with all Doug and Gail's family and friends to support them through the difficult times to come. For our part ... Nancy and I will hug our kids a little tighter, call our friends and family a little more often and celebrate the life of our friend Doug McGregor whenever we get together with Albertusians as we try and process this loss!! We wish peace and perspective for Gail, Mark, Reed and Evan and look forward to the time when the mention of Doug's name brings the happiness of fond memories instead of the sadness of his loss!

Dear Gail and boys: Although we have never met, I want to share some thoughts with you about Doug, husband and dad. I had the pleasure of meeting Doug in 1976 when he joined Trinity College School in grade 10. He resided in in Brent House where I was the assistant housemaster. He quickly became immersed in school life, notably athletics where he was a natural leader and athlete The same could not be said of his academic life. Doug knew early on that to be successful at TCS would take all his grit and determination, the same attributes he brought to the playing fields and hockey rink. Residence life is all-embracing and Doug soon earned his stripes as a diligent and hard working student among peers and faculty. He burned the midnight oil a lot and he and I had many a conversation about his work and the difficulties he faced. Four years on he graduated in 1980 with a string of honours to his name, the highest of which was his appointment as Head Boy in his final year. His life after TCS at Cornell and Queen's was further testimony to his dedication, kindness, integrity and friendship as were the days of his professional life. May you all find strength and solace in the memory of the good times shared with you and so many friends and colleagues. I regret that a back ailment will prevent my attendance at the memorial on Tuesday. I shall remember Doug with great affection. He was one of the good guys!
