Dear Eve and Family, Sincere condolences from the whole team at Ontario Farmland Trust. It was a joy and pleasure working with Hartland and his sister Lorna Bethell over the past several years to provide lasting protection for Lorna's farm with a conservation easement, and to raise some additional support for the Trust's work. Hartland's love of the land and passion for conservation was an inspiring part of his legacy, alongside other admired contributions he has made to so many worthy causes. His friendship and encouragement will be missed. The Ontario Farmland Trust has received two donations in memory of Hartland from Rodger Cummins and Don Prince. I am so saddened to hear of Hart's death last week. I am one of many many people who just adored him! Whenever he spoke to someone..he made them feel like the most important person in the world. That is a rare skill. He was such a good friend of my Dad's and we will all miss him so much. My love goes to Eve,Cynthia,Wendy, Keith and Willa. It is always hard.

Dear Evie I wanted to express my condolences and those of Donna as well at Hart's passing. Even though it has been some time since our paths have crossed his grace and his presence were always a source of strength for me at St Mikes. I recall his support, his infectious smile , the big handshake and of course his untiring commitment to that great hospital. His funeral was moving and beautiful a remarkable combination of family friends and service. I was privileged to be there and was sending you my best wishes from afar. I was very moved and everyone who spoke from his grand children to the Pastor were excellent. Please accept my warmest condolences and sympathies at your loss. Dearest Mrs. MacD and family: I was awfully sad to learn of your beloved husband and father's passing. He was a lovely, gentle man. I remember with great fondness when you were our neighbours in London all those years ago, how much fun I had playing with Cynthia and Wendy. Mr. MacD was always so interested in whatever we were doing and he was always so kind to me. As I am sure you know, my late parents, Jules and Winifred, thought the world of him. Bob and I are so very sorry to hear of Hart's passing. Savary Island has lost a dear soul. Years ago I remember Hart and Eve with their children accommodated in various ways on their bicycles heading to the Savary Island tennis courts. It was a delight to see the whole family dressed in tennis whites bringing even more elegance to island life. Later I had the privilege of playing tennis with them, and nearly fell off the wooden bench when I was told Hart was the head of the Bank of Montreal! What a privilege to be with the family. Later Hart was so very gracious with helping to establish the Savary Island Land trust and giving such a huge piece of land to the residents. Thank you to the whole family for your love of Savary and generosity. Our hearts go out to you in your sorrow.

It was a role that he fulfilled with dedication for five years. In 1978, in recognition of his commitment to the heritage of his community and country, he became the first recipient of our Gabrille Léger Medal for Lifetime Achievement. I was saddened hear of the passing of such a gentleman. Hart was always quick to offer kind words and showed a caring nature for any that he met. We would cross paths only occasionally during the summers at Savary, usually as he went past Iotah on his way to the tennis court, and he would always take a moment to acknowlege our family and our ties to Alton, Ontario. Savary Island has lost a great supporter and the MacDougall family has lost a dear husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Our deepest condolences to the family.

I was privileged to have worked with Hart at Royal Trustco and travelled with him on several occasions in Europe visiting various of the international operations. Always one to remember an employee's name from his last visit, to listen and show great interest to staff input, to smile and be quick with a sincere laugh - and to represent the company with incredible enthusiasm and diplomacy. I got to know Hart during the transition of ownership of Royal Trust in 1993. It was a difficult period for Hart but I was very impressed with his kindness and helpfulness to me and others. He was a true gentleman in good times and bad, of which there are few.

I am a long retired Molson Breweries employee,and I consider myself very fortunate to have met Hart on several occasions informslly.I found him to be very easy to talk to. He was always interested in how things were going and never once ever showed any evidence of his exalted position (compared to mine ). I remember Hart fondly from my days at Bank of Montreal and Royal Trust. He was one of the few people I've met who was liked by everyone he encountered. A real "people person", who nevertheless worked very hard to know about the people he might be dealing with. All in all, a thoroughly nice man whom it was a pleasure to know.
