Obituary of Gene Anne Turner

Dr. Gene Anne (Jan) Turner, M.D. (nee Stewart) Passed peacefully, in her sleep, in Toronto on Sunday, March 11, 2012 in her 86th year. Beloved wife of the late Edward. Loved mother of Margaret (Doug), John (Julia), Robert (Sylvie) and Richard (Anne). Fond grandmother of Andrew, Cameron, Graeme, Ian, Beth, Emilie, Eric and Will. Born in Croydon, England on April 29, 1926, Jan graduated from Harbord Collegiate in 1944, followed by earning her medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1951. After interning at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, she returned to Toronto in 1952, marrying Ed. While raising her four children, she held a variety of medical positions, including being Hamilton's first District Health Officer, physician for the Borough of East York and doctor at the students' health clinic at the University of Toronto. In later years, after training at the Institute for Human Relations, her interests turned to administering to her patients' emotional and mental health needs through psychotherapy. In her personal life, Jan enjoyed music, involvement in her church, exploring spirituality, spending time at the cottage and life with family and friends. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16th. A service will be held in ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, 65 Church Street, Toronto on Saturday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
