It is with much regret and sadness that I learned of Hajime's death. I want all to know he was a very special friend of mine. We met when I was about 20, He was staying at my parent's house while looking for a job. We spent many a night into the wee hours discussing philosophical topics which he recognized that I, being young was hungry for. I especially was entranced by his distinctly Japanese view of life. He always surprised me with the comments he made on life in general. I will say without reserve that he was one of the most original thinkers I have ever met. He had qualities few appreciated but I daresay he was engaging to many and perhaps loved as well. I will remember him best as the one who introduced me to the jazz piano of Bill Evans and many others. I owe my ability to appreciate this music entirely to him. He was possessed with a great discernment and there is no doubt he was a complex person. But I shall remember him for what he was to me that is a friend when I most needed one. Sleep in peace my friend. We shall meet again.
