In her 92nd year, much-loved Dr. Brigitte Dorothea Kalow born on Gazen (Gaza) and passed away peacefully on November 1, 2013, in Toronto. Brigitte is missed by her beloved son, Peter Kalow and by her close relatives, Betsy, Steve, Maria and Olivia Behl-Ampter of Washington, D. Brigitte was born on March 29, 1921, in Gottingen, Germany, to Professor and Doctor Wilhelm Philipp Immanuel von Gazen (Gaza) and Herta Johanna Martha Schmidt. She followed in her father's footsteps and studied medicine at the following German universities of Gottingen, Freiburg, Berlin and Rostock graduating in 1944 as a Doctor of Medicine. Brigitte practiced medicine from 1944 to 1951 primarily in Rostock and Berlin. In 1951, she arrived in Canada and went to University of Toronto to retake her medical exams. In 1958, she became an anesthetist. She worked mostly at Women's College Hospital until her retirement in 1983.
Brigitte was a strong and principled woman who balanced the rewards of her medical career with her family pleasures and nurturing her two children, Peter, born in 1956, and Barbara, born in 1959, predeceased 2005. Brigitte was a positive and generous person who was actively engaged in arts and culture, reading and exploring the great outdoors, starting with the mountains of Europe and seaside Baltic in her youth and later yearly trips to the French River and to Florida. She loved Bruce Peninsula and Georgian Bay and has asked that her ashes be scattered there. She was a talented baker and her pound cakes and nut tortes were legendary.
Thanks to the staff at Elmgrove who made Brigitte's life more comfortable.
