I am so sorry to hear, and so belatedly, of the death of Prof. Helmstadter. He supervised my graduate studies, and I will always remember his gentleness, kindness, and patience. He was a good and wise man, calm and dignified, and always welcoming and ready to offer quiet, sensible advice. A blessing to so many students. Thank you.

Dear Carol: I was very sorry to read about Dick's passing and had hoped to attend today's service to express my sympathies in person to you and Jane and Sarah and Annie. (I know she's now a grownup Anne, but that's how I remember her!) A lot of years have passed since we lived next door on Chestnut Park but we have many happy memories of time spent in each other's company. I know my boys, Tom, Jamie, Keith and Marc would have at least fleeting recollections of happy childhood moments spent in our respective gardens. You and Dick were excellent neighbours to look back on. I trust that your girls and your grandchildren will be standing by to help you through these sad times. Most sincerely, Wendy

Carol, please accept the condolences of Ann and myself on Richard's death. Richard and I were colleagues for many years. I was a TA in his course in 1964 when he obliged me to re-mark a whole batch of final exams because I failed to meet his standards. Later I taught a graduate course with him and spent many hours with him and other colleagues shaping and re-shaping the offerings of the "British area". For decades we played ferociously competitive games on the squash court. He was a wonderful person and a congenial colleague whose memory I shall long cherish. Neither Ann nor I can be at the service as we are out of the country.

I was very sorry to learn of the passing of Professor Richard Helmstadter. I first met Dick as one of my history professors in graduate school at the University of Toronto in the mid 1960s. Later he became my Ph.D. thesis supervisor. In the years following the completion of my Ph.D. I sought his advice on many academic matters. He was generous with his time reading drafts of my articles and early books, always providing excellent suggestions for improvement. We became very good friends in the process. Barb and I were often guests of Dick and Carol at their home in Rosedale. I will never forget the help which he gave me as both my mentor and my friend.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to members of Richard Helmstadter's family. As a graduate supervisor, he had an exceptionally strong and lasting influence on my life. As the years have passed, I have come to realize more and more how exceedingly kind and patient he was with me also. I wish I had the right words to express the sadness I share with you in your loss. Bill and I were saddened to read of Richard's death in today's newspaper. We remember how kind and caring both you -- Carol and Richard were adopting our young Airedale Sadie, during a difficult situation, over twenty-five years ago. May happy memories of Richard help soothe you and your family in this time of sorrow.
